Weekend Book Friends #38

Weekend Book Friends #38

Greetings you guys! It’s Friday and a long weekend here in South Africa. We celebrate Youth Day today. My Mommy says she can really start to feel her youth slipping away a bit as she is dead tired and just want to lie on the couch and read her book. Of course we can go and do that. As soon as we’ve  managed to post our second Weekend Book Friends post for this year. Dreadfully shameful, I know. But I do understand that my Mommy just want to go and snuggle with her book. Our choice for this weekend really is a beaut. We’ve actually just started it last night, but we already know this is going to be a book we will love. We fell in love with Shelley Read’s writing style from the word go. Let’s see what my fellow weekend readers will think of this one. Our first stop is with  @ Reading is my Super Power for First Line Friday and to Gilion @ Rose City Reader for Book Beginnings.  Every Friday you can link up and share the first sentence of your current read (or the one you plan to devour over the weekend), as well as your initial […]

Weekend Book Friends #37

Greetings you guys! It’s April and the first time we get to take part in Friday Link up! This year has been super busy so far, but I’ve decided to stop complaining about the fact that we hardly get to the blog at all, and just be thankful for every spare minute we have. Of course we’ll spend it with you! How have you all been doing? Anybody else as busy as an ant gathering for winter? It’s Easter Friday, so that means we have a long weekend and my Mommy are finally settling down with a few great books and we even set aside some time for blogging today. It’s also April and April means that we read Titanic. No, not huge piles of books (we wish!), but literally books on the Titanic. Every year we try to read one during the first two weeks of April to commemorate the historical, but still tragic event. This year, we are reading this one: We are about 10% in, but so far we really are enjoying it. Let’s see what my fellow weekend readers will think of this one. Our first stop is with  @ Reading is my Super Power for First […]

Weekend Book Friends #36

Greetings you guys! How many Fridays do we  have left? Two? Three? Gosh, I can’t believe we’ve only joined our Weekend Book Friends so few times during the past year. We used to take part every week! Was 2022 a very unorganized and messy year for you as well? Mommy and Daddy are on holiday. For three weeks! This is the longest they’ve been on holiday for 6 years. So far she hasn’t done much, not even a whole lot of reading. I believe she might finally be turning into a cat and has been sleeping mostly since yesterday when their holiday started. This morning we woke up to rainy weather and she quickly rushed to the Bookstore to go and buy just one book. Not that there are no other books to read in this house! Of course she came home with 4 books. She started with this one immediately: Let’s join up with our regular reading buddies to see if this book is actually going to work for us or not. Our first stop is with  @ Reading is my Super Power for First Line Friday and to Gilion @ Rose City Reader for Book Beginnings.  Every Friday you can link up and […]

Weekend Book Friends #35 – Fraterfest Day 1!

Weekend Book Friends #35 – Fraterfest Day 1!

Greetings you guys! It’s Friday and day 1 of Fraterfest. Whaa haa haaaa haaa!! Yea! The weather is perfect here with us. Rainy, misty, the wind is howling…. Ooooe we need to get into bed and start reading. We don’t really have a very clear cut reading schedule for this year’s Fraterfest, we’ll just grab the books as we go along. Tonight we will start with this one: The sun is shining on the golden castle on Rainbow Bay – and change is in the air! Amelia is a single mother, doing her very best to look after her young son, Charlie – but money is tight and times are tough. When she first hears that she is the last descendent of the Chesterford family and that she has inherited a Real-Life Castle by the sea, Amelia can’t quite believe her ears. But it’s true! She soon finds that owning a castle isn’t quite the ticket to sorting out her money problems that she’d first hoped: she can’t sell, because the terms of the ancient bequest state that any Chesterford who inherits the castle, must live there and work towards the upkeep and maintenance of the family home. So ever-practical […]

Weekend Book Friends #33

Greetings you guys! The second week of our winter holidays are just about done, but it’s not as if we’ve actually been doing nothing like we’ve intended to do. In fact, we are running around like crazy monkeys after all the renovations and to sort the house out again. But this afternoon, we do plan on doing nothing but loafing around reading our book. Taking a break from packing shelves yesterday, my Mommy took some time sorting through her older reviews in order to update them to this site. She came across her review for 11/22/63 by Stephen King. It reminded her that we still have the following book on our bookshelf and we’ve been meaning to read it for ages. We’ve started with it yesterday afternoon, but actually just fell asleep. Not that the book is boring at all. We’re just tired. We are quickly going to say hi to @ Reading is my Super Power for First Line Friday and to Gilion @ Rose City Reader for Book Beginnings.  Every Friday you can link up and share the first sentence of your current read (or the one you plan to devour over the weekend), as well as your initial thoughts and impressions. Weekend Book Friends #32

Greetings you guys! The day has finally arrived! This is the date that all our renovations should be done. The fact that it is not done, is completely irrelevant and it’s only 08:00 here in SA now. So a miracle might still be in the works here. And if it’s not, we really, really don’t care. If my Mommy comes home from school today, she is going to do nothing but read her book. We are busy with such an intriguing read: We did find the opening a bit slow, but it sure is taking off at speed now and I can’t wait for Mommy to come home and we can continue reading. “WE HAVE YOUR DAUGHTER.’ It’s the first Tuesday in September, the afternoon of her one very bad day and Frida is trying to stay on the road. On the voice […]

Weekend Book Friends #31

Hi there you guys! Mareli here, coming from OR Tambo International airport. In case you didn’t know, that is in Johannesburg, South Africa. My home country. I have a quick few minutes to write a weekend post and have a cup of coffee before we depart for Mauritius. Whoo hoo! Of course my Kindle is fully loaded and I even sneaked an extra book in. I won’t share that one with you today, as it’s in Afrikaans and I don’t have time to do a translation as well… So I’ll just share my current kindle/review read with you today. I think it’s quite possible that I might not be the only one reading this one at the moment. I do like the very first page…. “Open me carefully….” – Emily Dickinson, Intimate Letters Chapter One opens with: Writing in the Boston Public Library had […]

Weekend Book Friends #30

Greetings you guys! How was your week? Ours was utterly crazy. But I’ll ramble on about it on Sunday. For now, I just want my Mommy to finish up here so that we can read our book. It’s windy out there, so time for a blanky and a nice cup of tea. What fun we are having with the readalong with a few fellow South African bloggers and Instagrammers. Of course it’s fitting that we are reading a book by a South African author. This book is really sooooo goooood and I can’t wait to be done so that we can tell you all about it. It’s got everything we love in a book: Intrigue; mystery; something/someone that gives us the creeps; humor; a bit of romance…. For now, we will share our Book Beginnings and page 56 excerpts with you. For our first stop, we will pay a visit to @ Reading is my Super Power for First Line Friday and to Gilion @ Rose City Reader for Book Beginnings.  Every Friday you can link up and share the first sentence of your current read (or the one you plan to devour over the weekend), as well as your initial thoughts and impressions. Weekend Book Friends #29

Greetings you guys! It’s Friday and the weather outside spells 90% chance of reading time. Rainy and cold. We’ve had a hectic week at school and with sorting out book reviews, so for this weekend, we just want to curl up on the couch and read whatever we want. No deadline or anything! We’ve been excited to read our choice for this weekend ever since the reviews first start popping out. The Maid opens with a bar of soap and a prologue: I’m your maid. I’m the one who cleans your hotel room, who enters like a phantom when you’re our gallivanting for the day, no care at all about what you’ve left behind, the mess, or what I might see when you’re gone. I’m the one who empties your trash, tossing out the receipts you don’t want anyone to discover. […]

Library Card April 2022 & Weekend Book Friends #28

Library Card April 2022 & Weekend Book Friends #28

Greetings you guys! Where did March go? When I searched for my Library Card now, I’ve realized we never did a Library Card for March. Good grief! Our last one was for February. No idea how this happened. I am at least very proud to report back that we have completed our February Library Card with only one book that ended up being a DNF. April has quite a few public holidays coming up and we have quite a few books to get through so we are very grateful for the upcoming public holidays. My Mommy had Book Club on Wednesday night and she brought the follow books back for this month’s reading: Book Club The Curious Charms of Arthur Pepper is actually still my Mommy’s book and it should go out of Book Club in July. She hasn’t read it yet though and we don’t want it to just disappear onto the shelf again. The Maid by Nita Prose is a brand new addition to the Club and yes, my Mommy called first deps. Very excited for this one due to all the brilliant reviews. The Island of Missing Trees by Elif Shafak finally came home with her. I do hope that […]
