For more on Wondrous Words Wednesday, you can click here. There is a Mr. Linky attached at the bottom of this post if you’d like to make your own post and add your link. Can you believe that tomorrow is the 110 year anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic?  As far as I have it, there is no one left to tell the tale, but throughout the last century, there’s been numerous recollections, retellings and speculations on the awful events of 14/15 April 1912. Therefore, I’ve decided to make our Wondrous Word for this week: I’m not going to give you a history lesson today. I am sure The History Channel and various other platforms are flooded with programs and articles this whole week. But did you know that Titanic’s name didn’t just get sucked out of some […]

Wondrous Words Wednesday – Frustration

Wondrous Words Wednesday – Frustration

Greetings you guys! This is going to be a 5 min post. Our internet has been down for the last day and a half and mobile data only gets you that far. Oh, the joys of building and renovations. If one of the trucks are a bit too heavy on the ADSL line that is buried under the pavers, the internet goes down. Daddy isn’t at home and Mommy has no clue where to check or even what to say regarding the astounding service from the call center. Hopefully Daddy will be home tonight… Soooo our Wondrous Word for today, is a word all of us know or experience at some or other time and it’s my Mommy’s main emotion (I guess it’s an emotion as well?) today: Thankfully I am here and as you know, cats are the perfect antidote to frustration. We’ll just drink some tea, read our book… No Mr Linky today, we are a bit short on mobile data. You do know that mobile data is ridiculously expensive in South Africa?  So sorry about that (the expense rates and the fact that we don’t have a linkup)! But if you want to take part in WWW, […]

Holidays are two sleeps away. Of course we are just going to swagger into it. Yup, that is our Wondrous Word for today. It’s the first time in a long time that my my Mommy will have a holiday where she can actually just relax and not worry about things happening at school and in the business. The joys have getting a partner in! So yes, we plan on swaggering around the house and get a few things done for school and the library in the new term. The word swagger isn’t a new […]

You are also welcome to share words you simply want to show off to us. For more on Wondrous Words Wednesday, you can click here. My Mommy is currently reading Triflers Need Not Apply by Camilla Bruce and my Mommy didn’t have a clue what a trifler is. Perfect choice for a Wondrous Words Wednesday. Our trusted friend Merriam Webster, has a bit of a different definition though: a person who lacks experience and competence in an art or science he was never taken seriously as a comic book artist, with most illustrators regarding him as a mere trifler Synonyms for trifler amateur, hack, hacker, inexpert, jackleg Words Related to trifler beginner, freshman, greenhorn, kid, learner, neophyte, newcomer, novice, rookie, tenderfoot, tyro So […]

Wondrous Words Wednesday – Catawampus

Greetings you guys! How are you today? I am just a tad bit upset, but will tell you later. Yes, we are slightly late with posting our WWW post. Part of why I am so terribly upset. Today’s Wondrous Words Wednesday will be a really quick post, as my Mommy and Daddy are packing to go away for the weekend. Yes, of course that’s why I am upset! Wondrous Words Wednesday is hosted by yours truly. The concept is fairly easy – all you need to do, is share any new (or new to you) words you came across this week and share them with us. You are also welcome to share words you simply want to show off to us. For more on Wondrous Words Wednesday, you can click here. We got our word for today, from the lovely Wendy and Dani over @ ODaniGirl. They joined us two weeks ago and we simply love this word! Say it out loud. Gosh – that sounds so good. But I just don’t think the definition is suitable at all. I believe catawampus should rather be one of those spell words in Harry Potter where they simply wave the wand, say […]

You are also welcome to share words you simply want to show off to us. For more on Wondrous Words Wednesday, you can click here. In case you haven’t noticed before, my Mommy loves company and people. I know, that’s rather strange for a bookworm, but did you know that worms actually love company and form herds? Earthworms form herds and make “group decisions”, scientists have discovered. The earthworms use touch to communicate and influence each other’s behaviour, according to research published in the journal Ethology. By doing so the worms collectively decide to travel in the same direction as part of a single herd. See, that is why all you bookworms love to gather here on the blogosphere and herd together. I think the perfect word for all of you today is: We love revering to the Merriam Webster Dictionary for word definitions.  Full Definition of gregarious 1a: tending to associate with others of one’s kind – […]

You are also welcome to share words you simply want to show off to us. For more on Wondrous Words Wednesday, you can click here. I see a lot of people choose a word of the year. I’ve actually never thought about that. Have you ever done that before? If I have to choose a word for 2022, I am going to be a copycat and take the brilliant author, Colleen Hoover’s word of the year: If you Google the word, you will see that the word cromulent originated as a joke on the popular sitcom, The Simpsons. If it’s a real and proper word by now, in other words, is it listed in the Oxford Dictionary, I actually have no idea. But I do know that Merriam Webster considers it as a perfectly, cromulent word. Cromulent first appeared in the February 18, 1996 […]

This week will be our favorite one and our chosen word is also one of our favorite words in the whole wide world. No, it’s not a new word to any of us, but after the passed year, the concept became a bit foreign. When my Mommy comes home from school today, we are officially on holiday until the 10th of January. Whoo hoo!! We really need a nice, long break. Don’t worry, we promise not to disappear. In fact, the plan is to spend much more time on the blog than what we did over the last couple of months. But before all that, let’s quickly take a look at the word holiday. Etymology. The word holiday comes from the Old English word hāligdæg (hālig “holy” + dæg “day”). The word originally referred only to […]

You are also welcome to share words you simply want to show off to us. For more on Wondrous Words Wednesday, you can click here. Our Wondrous Word for today, is a word that is probably well known to those of you who speak the Queen’s English. Here in South Africa, we also speak the Queen’s English, the question is just which Queen you refer to. I do love the English language and I so enjoy seeing simple, every day words just slipping through my Mommy’s grasp of understanding. Like this one: Reticence is one of those words that are best described by looking at its synonyms. reserve restraint inhibition shyness disinclination hesitance reluctance unwillingness These are not characteristics you would easily use to describe me. However, I can think of a few bookish characters who would fit the bill perfectly. The first character to spring to mind is of course Mr. Darcy. The cake, the statue and the portrayals. Mr. Darcy […]

Stupid and foolish actions, brings us to our Wondrous Word for today: My Mommy is currently reading This must be the place by Maggie O’Farrell. It’s what my Mommy calls an onion book. So many layers that needs to be peeled. It’s a Book Club book and she’s had it for the last two months and she’s still not done! It’s just one […]
