Friday Fives #5 with Book Blogger Hop and Friendly Fill-Ins

Posted May 22, 2021 by elzaread in Friday Fives / 38 Comments

Greetings Humans! Yes, yes – I know it’s Saturday already and we are a bit late for a Friday post. But yesterday was dreadfully cold and rainy, so when my Mommy came home from school, we just snuggled up with a book. Until she had to be back at school. They had a fun-run this morning and she had to be at school at before the crack of dawn.

We are still going to link up with Friday Fives and Book Blogger Hop and then we want to join a new weekly meme today. Because cats. No other reason is necessary.

For our firs link today, we link up with  Connect Five hosted by the BookDateConnect Five is really very easy – just pick 5 books that are connected in some or other way. Theme, cover, genre, author – you name it.

As you know, my Mommy is a teacher/librarian and this week Mommy decided to show you the five series’ that are the most popular at school:

1. Basically any of the series or by Enid Blyton. Famous Five, Secret Seven, Amelia Jane. All of them are still very popular. The same with Roald Dahl. Not a series no, but still very popular.

2. Diary of a Wimpy Kid. My Mommy says she’s way to old to understand the fascination. But she has three complete sets in the library and it is always out. Same with Dork Diaries.
3. Percy Jackson – The kids love this series just as much as The Heroes of Olympus. She says she does understand the obsession with that a bit more.
4. Bear Grylls. With the boys and the girls. But it really is a fun series and the kids read it up to Gr 7.
5. Middle School. Of course it will make the list of any school library. The writing is good and the kids enjoy it tremendously.

Book Blogger Hop

Next up we will link with The Book Blogger Hop. The Book Blogger’s hop’s purpose is to give bloggers a chance to follow other blogs, learn about new books, befriend other bloggers, and receive new followers to your own blog. Every week, there will be a prompt featuring a book related question. It’s hosted by Ramblings of a coffee addicted writer and I guess he hops around like a bunny due to all the caffeine. Hence his name.

Today’s question: Do you keep a budget for books?

Last week Sunday, on our Sunday Post, I told you about the Book Club that my Mommy belongs to. Although she gets a fair amount of money to spend on books once a year with the Book Club, she still buys books all through the year. Not on a budget. No. Just randomly. And then we get no-name brand food for a week. This graphic fits her very well:

Friendly Fill-Ins

We’ve been eyeing this meme for a couple of weeks now. We first saw it on Yvonne’s blog over at Socrates Book Reviews and after playing amateur sleuth for a bit, we now know that it’s hosted by 15 and Meowing and Four-Legged Furballs. They come up with a couple of sentences, and the you have to fill in the blanks. This week’s questions:

1. Lately, I’ve been __________________________.
2. I find ___________________ fascinating.
3. If I had known _________, I would have _________.
4.  I can’t help but _________ when I’m nervous.

Our answers might differ from week to week, depending on who feels like answering the question!

1. Lately, I’ve been a bit overwhelmed by work. My Mommy is a teacher and it’s middle of the second term here in SA. Enough said. All fellow teachers will understand and start sending books and chocolates.
2. I find human behavior fascinating. That question is answered by both me and my Mommy. Same answer.

3. If I had known Ballet is sooo much fun, such good exercise and the best workout ever, I would have started dancing years ago. My Mommy is 42. Don’t ask too many questions. She’s been at the physio a couple of times already since starting with Adult Ballet classes.

4. I can’t help but hide in the highest tree or on the roof when I’m nervous. And then I work on Daddy’s nerves when he needs to get me down. We are a well balanced family.
And that’s all from us today! My Mommy has a Ballet class now and when she comes back, we are snuggling with a good book again.
Wishing you all a lovely weekend!
Lots of Love,

  1. Oh what cute pictures of the kids! I love seeing what books they're enjoying and I see some very familiar names. I really identify with that graphic! I have no book budget because then I'd just blow it and that would make me sad!

    • I don't have any Agatha Christies in the school library, would love to introduce the students to her too! But maybe they are still a bit small… Caroline Keene is still a popular choice though and that's at least also mystery. I do have a few of the Hitchcock middle grade books, but they aren't as popular as I would have thought.

  2. Oh my goodness, love the graphic! ? That's what I feel like every time I enter a book store, and then I end up having to choose 1-3 from a desperately full basket! Gah. And I'm so happy to learn that Enid Blyton and Roald Dahl are still popular at school. I used to love Amelia Jane, good to know I'm not a fossil yet. 🙂

    • Hi Lex! I'm sitting here wondering when was the last time I've only bought 1 book.. Good grief – I always leave the bookstore with more than one book!

No, we are not fossils yet. Roald Dahl and Enid Blyton and Caroline Keene are still very popular choices!

    • Hi there Shelley Rae! I have a whole shelf filled with Enid Blyton books and the kids always flock to it. Same with Roald Dahl. They are always out. Some books really are timeless!

    • Hi Diane! The kids always love to pose for a picture. Just had to beg the two bigger boys. I'm not a fan of Diary of a Wimpy Kid or Dork Diaries, but you know what – so what. The kids love it and it gets them to read. So yea to those two series!

  3. The kids in the pic look great and like big readers! I don't have a budget on books but I rarely buy any …. I try to only get them from the library which luckily gives us 3 weeks checking them out. Books aren't cheap in Canada. Enjoy your week!

    • Oh I am going to tell those kids that they look like big readers. Two of those I had to beg for a photo, they were actually with me for a language class and I hardly ever get them to take a book from the library! The rest are always in the library yes.

Books are very expensive in SA as well, that's why I only really splurge when it's my turn to buy for book club and the rest I buy at book sales and second hand bookshops!

    • Thanks Trin! Yes, books are the greatest joy. I'll eat pasta or bread for a week if I have to have. But I have to buy that book…

    • I think a large number of book lovers would splurge on books and rather use no-name brand cleaning products than go without the books they really wanted!

  4. Favourite books the world over! I know my class loved the Percy Jackson books – they had me reading them too! Of course I read Enid Blyton as a child and while I never read the Magic Faraway Tree as a child it was the best experience reading to a class of 7/8 year olds a picture version. They used to hang all over me as I read!

    • Hi Kathryn! I didn't start reading English Books until late middle school / early high school. So my first introduction to Enid Blyton was as an adult and mainly in the library at school. The kids really still love her books and The Magic Faraway Tree is still a strong contender for first place.

I've only read the first Percy Jackson, but always recommend the whole series to the kids.

      Thanks for visiting us!

  5. Lovely post! The book buying meme made me laugh out loud. And I loved hearing your answers for all of the blogging challenges. It's nice how you mentioned taking ballet… I've been dancing for years and I always love finding more people who dance, whether they're aiming for a professional career or just want to have fun. I'm in the latter category and love dancing for the same reasons as you!

    • I've joined an adult barre class about a year ago and that actually just made me miss the ballet even more! So I started with a ballet class as well in April and I love it. It's tough, because I can't remember half of anything. Muscle memory my ass. But I am having loads of fun and that really is all that counts!

  6. Thank you and your mom for participating in the fill-ins, great answers. That is so cool your mom is a teacher. I have a book I could send her, but it is for ages 4-7. And it looks like she teaches middle school. If she wants one, email me at pilch92@aol.com with the address to send it. I hope you don't really get on your roof- that is scary. Kuddos to your mom for the ballet class. I would love to do one, but I am too fat. And 42 sounds so young to 51 yr old me. Have a nice weekend.

    • I actually teach from Gr R, what is that now in America? No idea, K4 if I'm not mistaken. Any case, from Gr R up to Gr 7!

I will send you an email, but it's going to be a bit difficult to mail to me, we are from South Africa! Unless you have electronic copies available? I'll send you an email!

You are never to old to start with ballet and too fat is a very relative concept. I have two very good and close friends who are both 51 years old, seems like a good age to me!

      Thanks for visiting us!

  7. I recognize (and have read) all of the books the children are holding except Bear Grylls. What? There's a popular series of books that I haven't read?! Well, that is not acceptable. Off to the library I go. What do I discover? Apparently our library has just learned about this series, too, as there are twelve books of the series on order! Happy day! I've requested book one.

Here we would have the exact same books except Bear Grylls would be replaced by the I Survived series. Have you read it? It's fabulous.

I should add up my budget for books…the books I get at the author reading series…Book of the Month Club…the Birthday Book Club I have been in for twenty years…trips to the bookstore…Amazon orders…Whew! Maybe it's better not to look too closely.

    • Hi Debbie! I don't know the I survive series, no. But will look into it!

Bear Grylls is very popular and you must take a look, there are more than 1 series. The kids love it!

I wish we had like a Book of the Month here in SA. There was a subscription box, but it got cancelled in January. Damn….

Hope you will have a good week!

    • Thanks Beverley! I guess some books like Enid Blyton's and Roald Dahl's will stay classics forever. I can't really see Diary of a Wimpy kid becoming a classic though.

  8. I love your five series list. 🙂 I don't really have a book budget either. That comic fits me well too. Haha! I love that you are doing ballet. There's an adult ballet class at my daughter's studio too, although there are a couple of adults who dance with the younger dancers as well, depending on their schedules. My friend says she is just glad she's not made to wear tights and a leotard like the kids have to. 🙂 I hope you have a great weekend and week!

    • Oh but we do wear tights and leotards… LOL! I actually do 2 classes at the studio, the adult Barre class where we wear normal gym clothes and then the proper RAD class, with tights, leotards and buns! Lots of fun.

Glad to see I have a kindred spirit with that graphic! Loved it to bits.

  9. Love your fill-ins. Welcome to the Friday hops. We have lots of fun and you're most than welcome to join any and all the hops.

    Have a fabulous weekend. ♥

  10. So glad you joined in Friday Fill Ins. Isn't it fun? Yes, human behavior can be fascinating and a bit scary too.

    Have a great weekend!

  11. I absolutely adore this post! What a wonderful variety of book chat. I do like the Friendly Fill In's part!

I teach in England. We used to have 3 terms made of 6 half terms (a term would be split in two by a 1 week holiday). A lot of schools now refer to just having 6 terms, but being older I tend to fluctuate between the old and new – rather like I do between imperial and metric measurements! We are just coming to the end of term 5, though have the prospect of an 8 week term leading up to the summer holiday. That mid year point is always difficult.

    • Hi Louise! Here in SA we have 4 terms, running from January to December. With a longish holiday in winter (June/July) and our 4 week break in December. So yes, we are now approaching the mid year point. But to be honest, I won't complain too much. Amy is better than remote teaching! I really didn't enjoy it at all.

Glad you've enjoyed our post! The blog keeps me sane.?
