Monday Bloopers #3 – The Handmaid’s Tale

Posted September 6, 2021 by elzaread in Monday Bloopers / 10 Comments

Greetings Humans! Welcome back to our own version of Monday Bloopers . We got the idea for Monday Bloopers from Melissa’s Mochas, Mysteries and Meows. You should really go and visit her, she has the most gorgeous feline blog ever! We have been trying to do a few more feline posts and I am working very hard on perfecting my typing skills so that I can just start hijacking my Mommy’s computer and do my own posts.
Melissa hosts a fun monthly meme called Pet Photo Fail Blog Hop. I guess the idea is to post a photo that didn’t work as well as the shooter anticipated it would. *Camera shooter. No pets are harmed in this exercise.

Now seeing that there are only fur babies in this house, my Mommy’s photo inbox is cluttered with photos of all of us. Mainly of me of course. It’s quite the challenge to go through them all to find a photo blooper of me. No matter from what angle you observe me, it’s very close to perfection. But I guess if we have to use one, this one will have to do the trick this month:

I have no idea what happened there. It’s actually a jolly good shot! I suspect I was trying to jump up and from my facial expression, I guess I was ready to complain or give a valued opinion on why I had to get up from the fluffy blanky. If not for the unfortunate complaining tongue, it would have been the perfect posed photo.
Like I’ve explained to you in previous Monday Bloopers Post, we are still a bookish blog and no matter how adorable my booty is, it can’t be the show of this blog. Big mistake if you ask me. But be it as it may, Monday Bloopers is about things that didn’t work out quite as well a planned. Like books that ended up being a blooper for my Mommy.
Bloopers don’t always mean that the book was a complete mishap, but sometimes it’s just a complete misfit for a certain reader due to various factors. The book that we will feature this month, has been a raging success to a large percentage of readers across the globe. It even got its own television show. I do believe that in another life and in another time, my Mommy probably also would have given it a raging review. But in our current reality, this book didn’t work for my Mommy at all and it ended on the abandoned shelf.
This month we will feature:

Offred is a Handmaid in the Republic of Gilead. She may leave the home of the Commander and his wife once a day to walk to food markets whose signs are now pictures instead of words because women are no longer allowed to read. She must lie on her back once a month and pray that the Commander makes her pregnant, because in an age of declining births, Offred and the other Handmaids are valued only if their ovaries are viable. Offred can remember the years before, when she lived and made love with her husband, Luke; when she played with and protected her daughter; when she had a job, money of her own, and access to knowledge. But all of that is gone now . . .

Funny, unexpected, horrifying, and altogether convincing, The Handmaid’s Tale is at once scathing satire, dire warning, and tour de force.

My Mommy says she honestly believes that you need to read a book at the right time and the right season in your life. Books speak to us like that. The Handmaid’s Tale just fell in the wrong season. But there might still be a season for it.

What was your feel on this top notch book? What books ended on our abandoned shelf lately? You are welcome to share your photo fails with us as well!
Wishing you all a wonderful and blossoming September. It’s spring time in The Southern Hemisphere and we love looking forward to warmer days and sunshine.
Lots of Love,

  1. Oh Elza's expression made me laugh. I haven't read The Handmaid's Tale but do agree you need the right book for the right time. I just reread an Agatha Christie mystery the other day and loved it but when I went back to look at my thoughts the previous time I read it and I had been kind of "meh" on it!

    • I've read an Alice Hoffman book last year that I hardly gave 3 stars. But I know if I read it during non-epidemic times, I would have loved it. Books are magical portholes, but we need to be at the right gate I guess!
