Reading Challenges 2021

Posted December 31, 2020 by elzaread in Challenges / 15 Comments

Oh woe is me, oh how dreadful this will be. Yes, yes – I am being a bit over dramatic here. But please just put yourself in my paws for a minute or two. Just a couple of hours ago, I told you how grateful I am that my Mommy managed to finished her Alphabet Reading Challenge 2020. She got distracted by no less than 25 book of the planned 54 to make up a grand total of 79 books.

Apparently she now thinks she’s the queen of all Reading Challenges and decided to sign up for 4 (four) ????, Reading Challenges and aim to read 80 (eighty) 10 x ????????, books in 2021. Good Grief Woman. You do know that you still have to work, feed all of us, uphold your social calendar and pay attention to Daddy??

Maybe I should rather just give her the benefit of the doubt. She has proven to be able to complete a task at hand, even though it might be in some unconventional ways. So let’s see what she’s planning.

(You are all of course aware that if these challenges do materialize successfully, I will take all the credit. If not, it’s all on her).

It doesn’t appear as if there will be any international travelling any time soon. Especially not travelling from South Africa. Therefore, Mommy decided that we will undertake a marvelous tour around the world in the form of eighty books. Each one in/from/going to a different destination. Quite similar to Phileas Fogg in Around the World in Eigthy Days by Jules Verne.

No need in trying to click on the graphic. Yet. We only have the graphic so far and what’s going to be attached to it, is still a mystery to me as well.
All the rest of the graphics are linked to the various hosts’ sign-up posts. We are not a sign-up. Unless you want us to be.
Before Mommy decided that she’s now the queen of the Reading Challenge, she promised Yvonne @ Socrates Book Reviews that she will sign up for the Purrfect Reading Challenge. That sounds darn purrfect to me.
You can choose between the following levels to complete this challenge:

Purring – Read 1-10 cat mysteries
Kneading – Read 11-20 cat mysteries
Meowing – Read 21-30 cat mysteries
Catnip – Go crazy and read at least 31 and go as high as you’d like – the sky is the limit!

Let’s go with 1 -10. I’m sure Yvonne won’t mind if we upgrade, by any chance, later in the year.

Mommy’s never been to Europe and she would so love to go. She also doesn’t know the map of Europe as well as she thinks sh does (I think she’s rather clueless and Daddy agrees with me) and this fun challenge, hosted by our beloved Gilion over @ Rose City Reader, might just help us to put our 2021 Reading year on the map.
Once again, there are levels of participation:

  • FIVE STAR (DELUXE ENTOURAGE): Read at least five books by different European authors or books set in different European countries.

  • FOUR STAR (HONEYMOONER): Read four qualifying books.

  • THREE STAR (BUSINESS TRAVELER): Read three qualifying books.

  • TWO STAR (ADVENTURER): Read two qualifying books.

  • ONE STAR (PENSIONE WEEKENDER): Read just one qualifying book.

There are also a grand prize to be won here! We can so do this. But if we will qualify for the prize, the Good Lord above only knows. I’ve got no doubt that we can win this, the problem is just if we will be able to claim our prize in SA. What’s allowed and what’s not allowed, changes on a daily schedule.

Oh yes, we will sign up for the Deluxe Entourage.

As you know, English is not our first language. We actually speak Afrikaans. My Mommy has joined a lovely Facebook group earlier this year. It mainly consists of Afrikaans people and they all read mainly Afrikaans books, of course. It’s called “Lekkerleesboekrak”, roughly translating to – nice/lovely reading book shelf. They have their own Annual Reading Challenge and Mommy has decided to do that. She needs to complete 20 books for that challenge. If they will all be Afrikaans, I don’t know. But it will be great if she manages to read 20 Afrikaans books in 2021 and they are all in different places around the world.
Okay, seeing all of my Mommy’s planned challenges on paper/screen now, makes me realize that I think we can actually do this!
Are you joining any of these challenges? Please give us a shout-out if you are, we would love to know what you are reading and steal  borrow some ideas from you.
Good luck with your Reading Challenges for 2021 and may all the best books be ever in your favor.
Lots of Love,

  1. I went crazy this year and signed up for 9 challenges. What the heck was I thinking?! Some overlap so I hope that makes it less stressful. And, I am not pressuring myself to complete them all.

    • That's the most important Helen. If reading isn't for fun anymore, find something else!

I like the structure of a reading challenge, but it must only be a guideline.

Good luck with your challenges. I will keep an eye out!

  2. I'm sure everything will work out quite well for you Elza. You'll have many opportunities for lap sharing and cuddles while your mumma sits around reading. I wanted to introduce you to Polo, our boy, but he's not at all sociable except with his permanent staff and only then first thing in the morning after he's had a good long break from us all. I hope your mum enjoys her books & tell her I appreciated her comment on my blog. 🙂

    • Hi there Carol, thank you. You sound like a wonderful human and I do hope that Polo knows how fortunate he is. If you can sneak a picture somewhere, we will be very grateful.

Thanks for returning the favor! We appreciate it a lot!

  3. You are ambitious this year but it sounds like fun challenges! Traveling by book definitely sounds like the way to go as it seems like that will be the only traveling we do for quite awhile. Good luck and don't forget to pay attention to Elza – she seems neglected 🙂

    • Hi Katherine! I really do hope that I am not over ambitious here and that I'll manage!

I think the travel around the world in books can only be fun, and you don't even have to pack and unpack. I don't like that part!

Elza always feels that she can get more attention. She's a bit strange for a cat.

    • I understand! Comet is convinced he's horribly neglected and needs lots more attention. I thought cats were supposed to be solitary creatures?

  4. Sounds like some good challenges. Thanks for signing up with The Purrfect Reading Challenge. Of course you can upgrade at any time. I'm also doing the European Reading Challenge. I'm looking forward to armchair traveling! Have a great time with all the challenges. Happy New Year!
