The Classics Club (I finally did it!)

Posted September 22, 2020 by elzaread in The Classics Club / 18 Comments

I am so excited for this post today, I’ve been meaning to join The Classics Club for such a long time. When I first started blogging 3 years ago, I meant to do it. Never got round to it. This time around, I’m pulling an Eliza Doolittle on myself and move my bloomin ass.

No time for too much chitchat here, there’s lots of books that need to be entered here. In case you also want to to join, here’s the fine print:

  • – choose 50+ classics
  • – list them at your blog
  • – choose a reading completion goal date up to five years in the future and note that date on your classics list of 50+ titles
  • – e-mail the moderators of the Classics Club blog (theclassicsclubblog@gmail.com) with your list link and information and it will be posted on the Members Page!
  • – write about each title on your list as you finish reading it, and link it to your main list
  • – when you’ve written about every single title, let them and everyone else know!
It did take me some time to compile my list. I mostly made use of The Goodreads Classic Must Read List and I was actually quite surprised to see how many I have read. To make life easier for myself with this challenge, I am opening a shelf on my personal Goodreads Bookshelves to be a companion to the list below. Some of these will be re-reads, some will be first time encounters.

So without any further ado, here’s my list of 50 books I plan to read between September 2020 – September 2025. Books aren’t listed in any particular order (Good grief, I don’t have time for that as well)

4/50 Completed

Just some small print from my side:

I don’t believe in torturing yourself by completing a book you really can’t get your nose stuck in. So if I read any of these and I know I won’t complete it, I will replace the book with another one on the Classics lists. It will be mentioned on this post and the monitors informed.

Gosh, this is a bit of a long post today. I think I need to go and get my nose stuck in a book now before I get completely discouraged!

Have you read any of the books on my Classics list? Will you advice me to remove and replace any of these?

If you are also a member of The Classics Club, please give me a shout out.

Happy Reading!

  1. What a wonderful list! There are so many of my favorites on it, and numerous ones that are on my own Classics Club list! I think we are kindred spirits with our reading. Enjoy your classics reading!

Hi there Robin! Thank you so much. I really should spend more time on my Classics Club. Last year has not been good on that front, but I will try to do better this year!

  2. This is a great list! I absolutely want to read 'The Alienist' as well although I hadn't even thought to put it on my list! Also, a great classic with a talking cat that may or may not be evil is 'The Master & Margarita' by Mikhail Bulgakov, an absolute favourite of mine 😀

    • Hi there Juli! I don't know about The Master & Margerita, but I will take a look now.

I need to pay more attention to my Classics Club challenge, I have made a note and will start adding it to my monthly Library Card. That way it will at least stand a change to be remember!

  3. I can't wait to see what you think of Mrs. Pollifax! They're short books so that first one will be easy to knock out. I joined the Classics Club 6 years ago and am no where close to finishing my 50 but really need to get back to it. I can't wait to see what you think of all your choices!

    • Hi AJ! I was also contemplating if I should join or not, but decided to do afterall so that I can sort my classics out more! I do want to read so many of them, but I keep on being distracted by other books…

    • Aaah – Thanks Davida! I love John Irving. He is one of the authors who inspired me to write when I was much younger. Can't believe I've never read A prayer for Owen Meany.

  4. Nice list. I have read only 24 of these. You will have to read the whole series with Mrs Pollifax. They are so good, each set in a different country. And I highly recommend them as audio. Perfect narrator.

    • Hi Emma! I saw the Mrs Pollifax books over at Katherine's blog (I wish I lived in a library) and it immediately caught my attention. Can't wait to read them!

    • I was wondering if you are on the Classics Club! I actually love reading the Classics, but tend to forget about them. This will just help a bit….

I've never read the Complete Lord of the Rings. Only The Hobbit. Maybe it's time to finally just read it.

  5. I'm so happy you have made your list and joined. What a great list you made. I'm completely with you; if I have a book on the list I'm not enjoying, I always replace it with something else. Life's too short.

    • Thanks for your inspiration Debs! I'm looking forward to it. I do have doubts about a few of these, but then there are always another book to replace it with. How marvelous!
