The Sunday Post #14

Posted October 11, 2020 by elzaread in Stacking the shelves, The Sunday Post, The Sunday Salon / 44 Comments

Greetings Humans! How was your last 7 days? True to its form, week 41 of 2020 was nothing but chaos and mayhem. Not all bad though. School started on Monday and I hardly saw my Mommy this past week. She left early in the mornings, worked till late and attended meetings 3 nights this week. Yes, I am extremely naughty this weekend.

Our country has also been in so much turmoil again this week. My Mommy says she doesn’t really want to talk about it. Although what we actually need is more international coverage on the brutal attacks and murders of farmers in South Africa. Our government turns a blind eye and the people are really getting fed-up now. Concerns over escalating protests should govt fail to deal with farm murders

The bestest news for this week, is that my Mommy’s art classes started again on Thursday. I’ve told you before that my Mommy works in a mainstream school, but she and her lovely team run the special needs program. And she’s the librarian (books balance everything out). Of course she needs therapy, and what better therapy than art. They are a colorful bunch of ladies who gather weekly with lots of paint and wine and a bit of whine and a mess. But it sure does help. Art Therapy should be compulsory. When I was still very small, I could go with, but now the dogs just want to eat me up.

Adding to the litter

I couldn’t be prouder of my Mommy. They had Book Club on Monday and she only took one book. Her Goodreads challenge is complete, but now she needs to finish her alphabet challenge. She is way more on track and she has all the remaining books lined up. The only outstanding one we still have, is an author who’s first name or surname, starts with ‘Q’. Any suggestions?
Mommy took this book from Book Club and it will cover the author starting with ‘O’:

We only managed two posts this past week. No guarantees that the upcoming week will be any better. One click on the image will take you to the post.

Reading

Not much changed from last week. Mommy only managed to finish Cilka’s Journey this week. What a read…. She started with The Flat Share yesterday and listened a bit to The Night Tiger. That’s an awesome book and I think we are still going to enjoy it a lot. Your Perfect Year is a bit like me – rather fluffy, but ever so cute and worth the time.

Let it Go

My mommy quickly stopped at the local supermarket after church this morning and lo and behold – they are unpacking their Christmas decorations!! Goodness Gracious me. Is it that time of the year already? But I think we are ready to start letting 2020 go. There are only 7 weeks of the school year left and I do hope that our December Holidays will be filled with hope and joyful anticipation for 2021.
May you all have a wonderful week 42 of 2020. Grab a towel, don’t panic and remember – the answer  to life, the universe and everything else – is 42.
Lots of Love,

Elza

  1. Christmas is everywhere in our shops, I’d quite happily cancel it! Your art classes sound great fun!

I googled the farmers, is it the robberies that are taking place? We never hear anything about SA, when Nelson Mandela was still in prison SA was always on the news but all we seem to hear is our own country and over the pond in the USA.

Hugs and have a good week.

  2. Sorry about what’s happening to the farmers. That’s awful. Since it’s not getting much international coverage, I’ll be sure to read about it whenever I come across articles. Good luck with school! I’ve only gone shopping twice since March, so I’m going to miss all the Christmas stuff this year.

Aj @ Read All The Things!

    • Hi AJ, every bit might help here. I don't go to the shops regularly, so I guess when I get there again, all the nice things will be out already!

Thanks for stopping by and I hope you had a good week!

  3. When I turned 42 this year, I was hoping to find answers to life, the universe, and everything but all I got was five more months of 2020!

For your Q challenge, I found Anna Quindlen, who I see mentioned elsewhere; Matthew Quick, who wrote Silver Linings Playbook if you've ever seen that movie (I saw that and then read The Good Luck of Right Now, which was good); and Spencer Quinn, who wrote Dog On It, a cute mystery written by a dog. I'm not sure how you feel about dogs but the book was fun!

I'm sorry your country is in turmoil. I honestly haven't heard anything about it but I don't feel that we get a lot of international news here in the US. I'm glad you have your art therapy! It sounds like a lot of fun! I don't have any artistic talent but I did go to a paint and wine studio one time with my sister and had a lot of fun!

    Enjoy your week!

    • Hi there Jen! I am turning 42 in December and I do hope by then we can make more sense of the universe and everything else!

I have so many awesome choices now for Q, I can't wait to see which one my scattered mind will decide on.

    • Hi Sherry, as soon as the elections are over there on your side – you can start doing your Christmas planning and hope for a better 2021.

      Have a good week!

  4. I haven't read The Flat Share but I read O'Leary's The Switch recently and absolutely LOVED it so fingers crossed The Flat Share is as good!

Sorry to hear that there's a lot of unrest where you are… There's been nothing in the UK press about it. 🙁
Long work days suck… I've had too many of those lately. I hope things settle for you soon.
    Take care.

    • Hi there Nicci! That is exactly what the people are complaining about. The farm murders get NO international coverage and hardly any local coverage. Surely something must be done. The people will need to speak up on other platforms. I am not one for politics at all, I'd rather read my book. But if I can get my 10c in, I will do it.

I am excited for The Flat Share! So far it is a lot of fun!

  5. Art therapy sounds heavenly! Can't believe it's that time of year again. It's been a year that's for sure. I hope things look up in your neck of the woods. Have a great week!

Spencer Quinn writes a mystery series called Dog On It. I read the first one a few years ago and I really liked it.

    • Hi there Heather! I am going to have a look at the Spencer Quinn series now. I've had so many great suggestions, I actually can't wait to see which book will end up being read. I do tend to change my mind very easily….

    • Hi there Ronyell, it's been going on for years, but after a seriously brutal attack last weekend, the people are just fed-up now. I do hope that our cries will be heard.

      Thanks for visiting us!

  6. The Art Therapy sounds just perfect. So sorry to hear that the farm murders are going on – what a terrible thing:((.

Yes… Christmas decorations are here a lot earlier, too. I think everyone has had enough of 2020. As for authors with Q – there's Matthew Quick, who wrote The Silver Linings Playbook – I haven't read it, but I know it has had a bunch of good reviews… I hope the coming week is a good one for both you and Elza:))

    • Hi Sarah! I was looking at The Silver Lining Playbook yes. I have so many books lined up now, I'm actually excited to see which one will win to poll.

Glad you are back surfing the blogosphere, always lovely to chat to you.

  7. Christmas is definitely being shown in the stores around here too. But Christmas always makes me feel happy.. so I don't mind it at all. Especially not this year.
Have a great week and happy reading.

    • Hi Diana! It sure does make for wonderful distractions. Almost feels like "normal".

Thanks for stopping by, hope you will have a wonderful week!

  8. The Flatshare looks good. I have to try that one. I've noticed the Christmas decorations in the stores too. It's way too soon for my liking but October is half over already. It feels like time is flying. Hope you have a great week!

    • The year truly flew by! But Christmas decorations can wait till end of November. At least. I've noticed that I get mixed up between Your Perfect Year and The Flat Share, so I am quickly finishing that one and will then continue with The Flat Share.

      Have a wonderful week!

  9. I'm doing a book with a title from every letter in the alphabet. I might have to cheat with x but I'm okay on the others I think. Amanda Quick comes to mind for an author that starts with Q. She writes historical romantic suspense that aren't necessarily the best quality but are so entertaining. Basically if a book was a candy bar! Just the idea of Christmas is stressing me out. Should we see everyone? How will we decorate our actual house if we won't be there until essentially Christmas Eve? And on and on and on. Hope you have a great week and yay for art classes!

    • Hi Katherine! I've seen Amanda Quick and Julia Quinn as well. Debs gave me a few suggestions as well, so I think I'll make it!
I'm also "cheating" on x for both title and author. At this stage it will be a toss up between Fantastic Mr Fox and Anxious People. At least x is in the title. I should update my alphabet challenge. As soon as it's done, I'll link you.
Your Christmas will be wonderful. You have survived a horrible year. The sparkle in your eyes and your boy's arms wrapped around you, will be the most beautiful Christmas decorations ever.
      Xoxo

  10. Sorry to hear about what is happening. That is terrible.
Art class sounds fantastic. I am glad you are enjoying it.
I am a Christmas Crazy Person so I love early decoration shopping, I love Christmas! lol

    Have a great week!

    • HI Michelle! I also do tend to buy the Christmas decorations when they unpack them. Then you get the best ones…!!! But I do try to wait with putting them up until end of November.

Hope you will have a good week, thanks for visiting us!

  11. I'm so sorry to hear about the things happening there. that sounds awful.

That therapy sounds very good. My cousin does art therapy for those with mental health issues and it does wonders for people.

Christmas stuff already? Yikes. 42,42,42,42… haha

    • Hi Greg!! I was betting on you to know 42…!!

The art teacher that we go to is actually an art and play therapist for children. I sometimes think she treats us the same way as them, but maybe we need it! We just get wine instead of cool-aide…!

Have a great week and take care of yourself.

    • Yeaaa! So glad you enjoyed it Laurel-Rain! Makes me even more excited to read it. Didn't have time today though, but hopefully during the week.

  12. My first thought with the letter "Q" was Julia Quinn. Amanda Quick is also a possibility. In case you are not familiar with it, that is the pseudonym Jayne Ann Krentz uses for some of her books. Have a great new week and happy reading and painting!

    • Thanks for recommendations! I've seen Julia Quinn, which one will you recommend? I will have a look at Amanda Quick.

      Thanks for stopping by!

  13. I think lots of people are ready to send 2020 on its way. I haven't been in a store since March, so I don't know what sorts of things are going on there. Christmas is not out of the question. My son always puts up their Christmas tree after Halloween!

Just for you, I sorted all the books I've read by author and I found several authors I like whose names begin with the letter Q. Anna Quindlen. (I like her nonfiction, though I'm only ho-hum about her fiction.) Isabel Quintero. (Wonderful picture books including My Papi Has a Motorcycle.) I also liked One for the Books by Joe Queenan. It would be a good time to read a book by royalty, maybe.

An art club! How delightful. We have a place in our town where people come to paint and drink wine, and I've done that a few times. So lovely.

You have an ideal job, I think, though just thinking of working makes me feel tired. Not sure how people are doing that right now.

    Have a great week!

    • Hi Deb! I put my Christmas tree up as close to the beginning of December as possible. Last year Elza was a kitten and a horror with the tree. I have no idea how she's going to be this year…

Thanks for all the book recommendations! I have added One for the Books and Anna Quindlen's Still life with Bread Crumbs has actually been on my TBR list. Will have a look.

I love my job, I work with such an amazing team. But the stress is high and the work demanding. That's why I do the library as well! Lots and lots of work, but only fun.

      Have a wonderful week.

  14. I've been seeing Christmas stuff in the stores for a few weeks now. I always look forward to the holidays, and this year, despite being such a mess, is no exception. Got my towell and off to parts unknown with the bug-eyed monsters. 42 forever!

    • Wha ha ha!! You made me laugh now. So glad you caught on and I hope there will be more.

I also love Christmas and I agree, even with all the mayhem this year – I will still make sure to celebrate a great Christmas!

Thanks for stopping by – hope you will have a wonderful week.
