The Sunday Post #17

Posted November 8, 2020 by elzaread in Stacking the shelves, The Sunday Post, The Sunday Salon / 46 Comments

Greetings all you lovely Humans! So sorry that we didn’t get to grace you with our presence last week Sunday. The last fortnight felt a bit like the game Fortnite. No idea what it’s about, but I know the kids at school are consumed by it and they hardly have time to do anything else. Quite similar as where we are at the moment.

We are finally starting to have more spring weather, but the spring in our steps are seriously getting worn out now. You do know that the school year ends in December here in good old South Africa? That means that we’ve literally only had one term of “normal” this year with the last term left with only 22 school days. Just about all my Mommy’s students are back at school with a few new enrolments (this time of year? Yes, I know. Crazy!). Planning for the new year (with 2 to 3 variants) are in full swing, parent meetings are happening daily, transfer letters and recommendations are written in Mommy’s sleep and her student assistant is writing exams. No wonder the poor woman buys so much books.

In less exciting news, the Covid Numbers are spiking rapidly once again in the country. We are still okay here in our little hide-away corner of the world, but rumors of a second lockdown is at the order of the day. The timing cannot be worse if it should happen. We are entering our peak tourism season and the whole country is on Christmas Break from around the 15th of December. Our Economy is already in a dire state with crime and riot numbers spiking higher than in recent years.

Mommy do try to get to the blog as regularly as possible and she actually reads a lot. I don’t think she sleeps all that well. Her idea of retail therapy is buying books and it sure is good therapy. So let’s have a look at what is new:

Adding to the Litter

Book Club and Second-hand Bookshop haul. The Irma Venter books and Rudie van Rensburg is in Afrikaans. Luckily for you speakers of the English language, the first two books in the Irma Venter series are now available in English Rogue #1 and #2. I love South African crime thrillers and will recommend it as proudly South African. Although that might sound weird. You do know we have some of the highest crime rates in the world and that’s not necessarily something to be proud of.
Kindle buys

My Mommy saw all three of these here on the Blogosphere and when they popped up on BookBub and Kindle Recommends, she just had to buy it. And that’s why networking and sharing your reviews with us novice readers are so important! Thank you to all the bloggers who recommended these ones. We can’t wait to get reading.
Speaking of Networking: We just about jumped out of our skins from pure excitement this morning, when Mommy saw an email from the renowned author, Elizabeth Pantley, in her inbox. This well-loved author of parenting books, have now tried her hand at novel writing and send us the kindest email asking if we would be interested in reading and reviewing her first book in a brand-new series.
Of course we will! We feel ever so honored that she spotted our little blog and think us worthy. Expected publication date is on the 15th of November and although we probably won’t have it done and dusted by then, we will have it done as soon as possible. I strongly suspect the feline aspect has a lot to do with our choosing. I tell you, keep a cat around. We have immeasurable worth.

Scratching the Blog Pole

Six posts in 14 days. It could have been better. It also could have been much worse. No Book Reviews. For now, reading is just fun and the link-up features a great escape from reality. If you’ve missed any of our post, just click on the image below and you will be directed to your missed post. Gosh, I love sounding like a Traffic Officer.
Top Ten Tuesday – Best Halloween Reads for 2020
Featuring After Anna and The Paris Architect

Top Ten Tuesday – Getting to know me a bit better. Our favorite post!
Wondrous Words Wednesday – Phantom
Throwback Thursday – Featuring The Girl who saved the king of Sweden and The Aviator’s Wife

Six Degrees of Separation – One, Two, Buckle my shoe

On the Couch

Recently Finished – Loved it! Light and fun read, but substantial enough not to feel like McDonalds.

Recently Abandoned – I was at 60% already, but just couldn’t anymore. When a third, or was it a fourth narrator were brought in at 60%, I was done. No, I did not abandon Lisa Unger. I will definitely try another one. What will be your strongest recommendation?
Currently Reading – The first one is in Afrikaans and seeing that my Mommy abandoned Lisa Unger for her Alphabet Challenge, this one will have to do. I believe we cover enough ‘U’s’ with this one. JUdaskUs by RUdie van RensbUrg. Not much time for our audio book and the last one will be finished in a day or two.

Currently Watching – We loved Enola Holmes! Did anyone read the books? Would you recommend it? Started with The Umbrella Academy. A bit strange, but mostly in a good way. Daddy loves it and that’s always good. Means we will all curl up on the couch.

And that’s it from us for today. Sure it’s more than enough. Just one last quick question: Have you noticed that we started using the round photos for our header photos? What do you think about it? Yay or nay? Me and Mommy loves it, Daddy says he didn’t even notice.

Hope you will have a wonderful week and remember to share your Sunday updates with us by linking to the following hosts:

  1. It is sad to see the COVID numbers rising around the world again. It sounds like you have been very busy as of late! I am glad you have been able to read a lot still. I have had a hard time concentrating on reading with the U.S. election and the aftermath. I really need to stay away from the news . . . Your Kindle buys all sound so good! I really enjoy historical fiction too. We enjoyed Enola Holmes as well, but haven't yet read the books. I have the first book in the series on my TBR pile. I'm hoping I can interest my daughter into reading it with me. I still need to watch the second season of The Umbrella Academy. I hear it's even better than the first. It took me awhile to get into it, but once I did, I enjoyed it.

I hope you have a great week!

    • Halloooo! So sorry for the late reply! Like I've just told Greg, it's a bright sunny day today and I am complaining about nothing at all. I haven't watched news this week, so I actually have no idea what is happen outside the school gate and the comfort of my own home.

We are soooo into The Umbrella Academy now. Every night we watch an episode or two. It's really good!

  2. I'm sorry to hear about the spiking Covid numers! Everything in the world seems crazy, doesn't it? We just had a nice election determination here but now everyone is still fighting *sigh*. Hopefully all the end of school year things go well for you πŸ™‚

    Hope your reads are good!!!!!

    • Hi Greg! It's a beautiful sunny day with no wind! So am complaining and worrying about nothing at all.

Not that much time for reading this week, but the weekend is ahead of me!

      Hope your week was good.

  3. Lovely book haul. Hope you enjoy them all.
I've been very behind with blogging and blog hopping but now trying to catch up. Covid is very distracting though.
    Lynn πŸ˜€

    • Hi there Lynn! My time to fall a bit behind with blogging and especially with the hopping. It's Saturday already and I only comment now….!

Live in general is rather distracting at the moment!

But we are very grateful that you've managed to pay us a visit. Always lovely to chat to you.

    • Hi Ronyell! The weeks just fly by soooo fast, we hardly get time for reading and as you kan see, we only reply to Sunday comments on Friday….!

But we are still heading over now!

  4. Our school year also ends in December, last years holidays were are write off because of the bushfires, everyone is hoping the virus numbers will stay low so that travel is possible this year.
    Enjoy your new books
    I like the circle πŸ™‚

    • Hi there Shelley! We have open borders as from today, but with very strict regulations. People will most probably travel for the holidays and as we live in a coastal, very popular holiday town, we will most probably be in our own lock down for December! It's actually the way it normally is! LOL. As long as I have my books and my house and can go to the beach early in the morning, it will still be a wonderful holiday.

Thanks for stopping by and I hope you had a week! Enjoy your weekend ahead!

  5. Glad you liked The Flat Share. It sounds like something I need right now … light & fun. I'm on the library wait list for it. Our Covid numbers are spiking too in Canada. Trying to dodge & keep safe. Stay well!

    • Hi there! I did like The Flatshare and just know I need to read more books by Beth O'Leary. You will enjoy it!!

Thanks for your visit and you must also stay safe.

    • Oh I'll believe that Trin! We don't do Halloween in SA, but I'm sure if the kids had half the change, they would all dress as Fortnight characters.

      Thanks for stopping by!

  6. I hope you won't have to be locked down again. The Covid numbers are spiking here too. Your books all look wonderful. Enjoy! Thanks to both of you for your kind words on my blog about the loss of my cat. It's greatly appreciated. Have a great week!

    • Hi Yvonne, the president addressed the nation last night and we will not have a second lock down. Thankfully! But we do remain in a state of emergency until January.

I've been thinking of you Yvonne, stay strong and be kind to yourself.

  7. I’m sorry to hear numbers are spiking, the same seems to be happening here too and we are fully expecting a second lockdown like England. Round is good! Some pictures look much better with a curve.

I’ve not watched Enola Holmes, I’m busy bingeing the US Office and I love it so much I may watch it all over again.

Have a lovely week kitties and mum and stay safe!

    • I saw you mentioned the US Office on your blog, I will have a look. I also like the round pictures. I just looks nice. I don't think I'll use it for everything, but definitely for features. Until something better comes up I guess.

Our president addressed us last night and we will not be having a second lock down. I am very grateful for it, but people do need to be more cautious here in SA.

Hope you guys are safe and healthy!

  8. I read all of Genova's books except Every Note Played. I'm going to add that to my TBR list. I loved the Flatshare too! Did you read or listen to her second book The Switch? It's so good, I hope you get to it too. Enola Holmes was a fun movie. This was a great post. Have a great week!

    • Hi Laura! Thank you so much for telling me about The Switch! I loved Beth O'Leary's writing style and will definitely like to read more of her books.

Thanks for your visit and for your kind words. Sorry I reply so late!

  9. i have high hopes for next year, here in the us. i knew this year was a wash, considering how everything is handled. i too have been reading for fun much more than i used to. i still have some review books, but unless it is an author i have been with for a while, i have tried to scale back. not always in the mood for blogging and writing reviews. my covid bubble is very small, but mr wonderful is out doing freelance. he is careful out and about and at home
    sherry @ fundinmental

    • Hi there Sherry! I am also feeling positive for next year. Things can only get better!
I have two reviews coming up for this month still and nothing more. Suits me just perfectly. My want-to-still-read-this in 2020 stack is still sky high!

Thanks for stopping by and I hope you've had a lovely week.

  10. I always enjoy reading your posts. ❀️ I recently watched Enola Holmes and I quite enjoyed it. I started the Umbrella Academy… I need to keep watching! I am very bad at keeping up with show series.

    • Hi there Maya! That's wonderful to hear. I am glad you enjoy our posts!

I'm also not very good with watching series'. If my husband watches it with me, I will finish the series for sure. But if he doesn't, I sometimes simply forget. I did finish Emily in Paris though!

Thanks for stopping by and hope you had a wonderful week so far. Sorry for the late reply…

  11. I feel like everyone is saying the same, that covid is starting or already started to spike where they are, it's the worst. I have been in lockdown for over 2 months now so can't wait for tomorrow to have some normality back, although I wouldn't be too surprised if we go back into a lockdown before Christmas.

Lots of new books for you to enjoy, hope you are enjoying the weather change. It's getting so cold here haha in Wales haha.

    Stay Safe x

    • Hi Chloe! I think I spoke way too soon. We've had dreadful weather this whole week.

Our president addressed the nation last night and it doesn't appear as if we will have another lock down. Very grateful for that! Just still adhere to safety precautions and they urge the people to get tested.

I do have some nice books lined up yes! Very excited for them all.

Thanks for your visit and hope you had a good week.

  12. It's strange the weather and seasons are completely opposite. We're finally into Fall here in California and I'm so relieved to be cooling off with some rain. Sorry to hear about the rise in Covid cases. It's happening in the States as well with record numbers! Not as bad in California as other states, though. Lockdowns aren't fun, but it seems like it'll be a normal occurrence until they get the vaccine going.

I just got a copy of Lisa Unger's Confessions on the 7:45 from my library. I've never read her books before so I hope it's good. Nice to hear that even though Angel Fire didn't work for you, you're still up for reading her stories. Have a great week! πŸ™‚

    • Hi Rachel! Spring is playing hide and seek this year as we've had much colder weather again this whole week.

I also have Confessions on the 7:45 on my TBR list and yes, I am still looking forward to reading it!

Thanks so much for stopping by and apologies for the late reply…

  13. Lockdowns are hard…I live in a senior residential facility, so they are super-cautious here. We've been on lockdown since March 11. But we are gradually being allowed out to family/friends houses during the holidays, with strict rules. I am a little nervous!

I enjoy Lisa Unger's books, but haven't read Angel Fire. I loved Confessions on the 7:45.

Enjoy your week, and here are MY WEEKLY UPDATES

    • Hi there Laurel-Rain! I can imagine how difficult it must be for you. A couple of the old age homes around our town are still under the strictest lock down regulations. My step-grandmother hasn't seen her mother since March.

I can imagine how excited you must be to see your family over the holidays! So glad for you.

  14. Glad the weather is turning for the better. I loved the movie Enola Holmes. I've the books are good, though, but I have not read any.

Umbrella Academy gets a lot better. Stick with it. I had to "put it down" for a bit but by the time I finished the first season I was hooked.

Falling into Magic looks delightful! I hope it's good. I also like your new round pics and designs. Looks great. Enjoy your week and stay safe!

    • We are a bit hooked on The umbrella academy now. It's darker than I thought. But gosh it's good!

I still didn't start with Falling into Magic, but I do hope that I can start tomorrow!

Thanks for visiting us and I hope you are having a good week.

  15. That's nice you're having more spring weather, here it's getting colder. These sure have been weird times with how different everything is with Covid. Our covid numbers are still rising too and we're back in partial lockdown for now.

I also got Falling Into magic and am currently reading it. I hope you'll enjoy the feline aspect, the cat has quite the role in the story ;). I hope you'll have a great week!

    • HI there Lola! Spring has left us again now… It's cold and raining here with us.

I haven't started with Falling into Magic yet, I just don't get time to do the download. Will try tonight. But please keep me up to date with your reading! Would love to know what you think about it. Thanks for letting me know that you are also reading it!

  16. Your book list is interesting — I've added Irma Venter to my list of detective fiction to check out. A book set in South Africa sounds very intriguing.

    be well… mae at

  17. When I am contacted by an author or a publisher, I feel so honored. I hope you enjoy the book.

I really liked The Flat Share. You described it perfectly. Light but with substance.

We still haven't seen Enola Holmes and we've only watched one episode of The Umbrella Academy. We hope to see The Office this week while we are offline in Arizona.

Do have a good week and I hope to see you around in coming days.

    • Hi DEbbie, yes – it is a wonderful feeling when an author considers you as worthy to trust with their babies. I do hope to start with Falling into Magic tonight.

You must have a wonderful trip and take time to relax and unwind.

      Lots of love,

  18. I still haven't watched Enola Holmes but I want to! It looks delightful… And Henry Cavill – yum!

England went into a second lockdown last week so it's sucked majorly here… The covid numbers are out of control. πŸ™
I hope you have a good week despite all the challenges.

    • HI there Nicci! Enola Holmes is definitely worth the watch. Great escapism at this stage. I've heard about England going into it's second lockdown. Gosh, not easy.

I've decided to now take every day as it comes. Not too much planning and don't expect anything! Just take everything as a bonus.

May you also have a wonderful week.

  19. Hey Elza and mum, I am sorry to hear you only managed one 'normal' term at school before spikes in 'the-pandemic-that-shall-not-be-named' started. Sadly here in the UK we are now in our second lockdown. although a slightly less restrictive one. Congratulations for being chosen to read Elizabeth Pantley's new novel – It looks like good fun, especially with the feline touch. Take care and happy reading! ???

    • Hi Jessica! The good thing about us making it through the school year even through all this chaos, is now we can motivate everyone else and say just hang on!!! I am wondering if they will call a second lock down here. I do hope not….

I am very excited for Elizabeth Pantley's new book, will start with it tonight.

Hope you will have a good week!

  20. It felt weird to see you mention spring, but I understood when I read some more ! It's autumn here in France but it almost feels like May. I loved The flatshare and Enola Holmes, too, and will be happy to read your review when you have finished American dirt. Happy reading πŸ™‚

    • It's amazing how the internet connects us all. Easy to get confused with weather and times. I am planning on making a wall somewhere in my house where I can display a couple of the world clocks. I am always getting confused with times of publishing!

Thanks for visiting us, hope you will have a good week!
