The Sunday Post #21

Posted December 13, 2020 by elzaread in Stacking the shelves, The Sunday Post, The Sunday Salon / 38 Comments

Greetings Human! Amazingly enough, I am not posting from cat-jail. The perpetrator in custody on our Post Header photo, is not me! I am very proud to inform you that our Christmas tree is still standing and no ornaments have been harmed as this post is published.

How was your last fortnight? Ours were hectically busy, but it was mostly good as well. School closed officially on the 2nd of December, but all the teachers were still working until last Saturday. Hence our absence on the blogosphere. If only Mommy wants to start leaving her laptop here, I can type and post away. Alas.

Mommy’s been working from home this week and will finish with all online classes as well on Tuesday. It’s been wonderful to have her at home and we’ve spend the whole weekend cuddling on the couch. I think she was still recovering from her Birthday celebrations on Wednesday. With lockdown regulations, she wasn’t allowed to have her big, Hitchhikers’ Guide to the Galaxy party, but she did get together with a couple of friends for the day and they spend it making Christmas wreaths and other Christmas goodies. And drinking Champagne. On Wednesday night, they had a couple of friends over and played Cluedo. And drank more Champagne. The murder was solved in the old fashioned way and it was celebrated by drinking even more Champagne.

The D.E.A.R ladies had their last Book Club for 2020 and I am very please to report that she didn’t come home with stacks of books. Only three. There is still a small stack of books that need to be read before the ball drops for the new year. More on that a bit later.

Adding to the Litter

My Mommy won an audio book! Whoop whoop! She’s not very good with winning. I am ever so grateful that she doesn’t have a gambling problem, I would be eating Supermarket no-name-brand for the rest of my life. But she actually won after entering a Book Tour Giveaway.
Thanks so much Lauren @  iRead Book ToursThe books sounds so very nice and seeing that it’s holidays, I know we will be spending lots of time on audiobooks again. (Image is linked to Goodreads)
Without Mommy’s knowledge, I’ve also requested a review copy for a book I’m just dying to read. Couldn’t believe it when it actually popped up on my Mommy’s email earlier this week. Luckily she also seems quite excited. Keep an eye out for my promo-post on the 4th of January 2021!

Scratching the Blog Pole

Not much happened over the last 2 weeks, but here’s our posts if you’ve missed them. Click on the image to read the full post.
Featuring Mommy’s review on When God was a Rabbit and keeping The Prince of Tides on the TBR pile.
You’ve guessed it – My Mommy turned 42. Here are a few interesting facts about the number 42. Besides the fact that it’s the answer to life and everything else.
We’ve been participating in Lynn’s Book Blog’s December Countdown and it really is the greatest fun. Our picks for day 12 and 13 is:

We haven’t done a Weekend Book Friends in months and it was good to just catch up a bit. Always fun to do that.

On the Couch

Recently finished

I’m sure you will hear more about The Aviator’s Wife later in the week. Brilliant read.
Currently Reading

The books that my Mommy need to finish before the ball drops for new year is:
I really don’t care which one she reads first or if she reads them all at the same time over the next 3 weeks. As long as they are done…
Currently Watching

Godmothered was a typical Disney – enjoyable and leaving you with a feel-good glow. Perfect for the holidays. Rebecca was brilliant. I felt like hiding under the pillow here and there, but mostly it was highly intriguing and true to the book. We will definitely watch it again.

Hanging by a Thread

Have you noticed that we haven’t used the dreaded ‘C’ word once in our post? South Africa is now officially on its second wave and it is very close to home as well. Mommy and Daddy know of quite a few people who are infected. The nearest city from us are under lockdown again and we are waiting to hear if our town and provincial borders will be open or closed for the holiday season. Dreadful. We rather just stay inside and escape from reality.
We do hope you are all safe and taking care and that your current books can also offer a welcome escape from reality. AND that all you Christmas trees are still standing and no ornaments have been harmed. Yet.
Remember to thank the following ladies for always being such lovely hosts and leave your links so that we can drop by.

  1. Sorry I’m massively behind on everything including visiting! Your birthday sounds lovely, it’s been so strange trying to celebrate in this strange new world.

I must watch Godmothered , it looks like just the ticket for Christmas!

Hope you have had a good week xx

  2. Glad your Christmas tree is still standing! Ours is too. Only a few lost ornaments and I have to keep them from chewing on the branches…Glad you can still do some get togethers and book clubs. I hope you have a lovely week. Happy birthday! 42 is definitely the meaning of life and the universe!

    • Thanks for the positive heads up! I guess every year is what you make of it. I guess I can live my 42nd year purposefully or at least trying to find some meaning in life!

  3. My cats have been so good about not bothering the Christmas ornaments this year. I thought I would be smart and put the gift for them my mom mailed to us about mid-way up the tree, sitting on the branches (toy mice and a bag of treats) so they wouldn't notice them. No such luck. The gift is now in the closet where it will stay until Christmas morning. 🙂

It sounds like you had a nice Birthday. I will have to live vicariously through you since I am still on lockdown here and unable to get together with others. I just learned that a coworker passed away from COVID yesterday. I had just talked to him two weeks ago. Several other coworkers have caught it as well.

A Cat's Guide to Bonding with Dragons sounds so adorable! I hope you enjoy it as well as the other books you are reading. Have a great week!

    • I don't have a problem with my 40's. Had more health issues than before, but then again – now we know it and it can only go better from here!

Book Club is always fun. Will miss the girls until the new year.

      Happy Holidays to you too!

  4. Congratulations on a Christmas tree that is still standing! 🙂

The Aviator's Wife has stuck with me as well. I can't imagine going through everything she did. I also enjoyed Rebecca but I've seen mixed reviews of it. I thought it was beautifully filmed and true to the bigger plot points of the book.

    Enjoy your week!

    • HI there Jen, so glad you also enjoyed The Aviator's Wife. It was remarkable and I have so much admiration for the honesty with which the book was written. I've just posted a Wednesday Wisdom on the book, will link you now.

Yea for Rebecca! I am so going to watch it again.

  5. Great post! Happy belated birthday…I'm so glad you were still able to have a get-together with friends. That dragon and cat book sounds so interesting! I love dragons so I will definitely be eager to read that post. I hope you, Elza, and your family have a great Christmas and New Year!

    • Hi Jade! I am struggling to get my mind to just switch off and go on holiday now, but as soon as I've hit that one, I am going to read the dragon book. I think it's going to be the most fun ever!

Hope you will also have a wonderful Christmas Time!

  6. Elza, you look too good, just like Duchess in the Aristocats, to ever harm a Christmas tree 🙂 I'm very much interested by the two novels that your Mommy has just finished reading. Go back to looking cute and being cuddly and have a great week !

    • Both of them were good! I've already forgotten who the culprit was in Q is for Quarry… Oh no wait – I remember. But it's an easy read. The Aviator's Wife is a marvelous read. Will linger for a long time to come.

It is rather difficult to scold Elza. She does have a way of just looking super cute and as if butter cannot melt on those fluffy white paws. Although they are always up to mischief.

  7. So glad the Christmas tree is still standing and that header definitely gave me a giggle. We put up a tree here and bought ornaments and I stuck to shatter proof because our floors in this very hip industrial loft are concrete and this would be the year the cat who has never shown any interest in the Christmas tree would decide to take out the accident. Cleaning up shattered glass at 2AM did not seem like the way I wanted to go. Thankfully, he's shown zero interest other then to hide behind it occasionally.
Sounds like a fabulous birthday party even if you didn't get to do the Hitchhiker's Guide party. I may have to steal that idea when I turn 42 very soon! Hope you're having a wonderful week.

    • You are most welcome Katherine! I don't actually have enough friends who "catch" the 42 and the towel thing, I had to explain all day long! Maybe you will be in better luck.

Glad the kitty doesn't show much interest in the tree. I also have glass baubles that I love. But I haven't used them this year or last due to you-know-who. Let's see next year!

  8. Sounds like a good week and that's great your Christmas tree is still standing. Your birthday celebration sounds like fun. Happy belated birthday!

And congrats on the win! It's always so fun to win something and even better when it's book related.

    Have a great week!

    • Hi Lola! Also very grateful that the tree is still standing. But one string of Christmas lights are not working anymore. Ah what the heck, there are enough other ones!

Thanks for the well wishes and I do hope you will have a good week too!

  9. My Christmas tree is finally up which I'm pleased about. I don't have a cat, I have a dog and he has no interest in it so fingers crossed it should be okay.
And I think we share the same birthday. Belated birthday wishes to you.
    Lynn 😀

    • Hi there Lynn! Really???!!! Happy Birthday to you!!! And you don't say anything….

Glad to hear your tree is up, my dogs never showed any interest in the tree at all. Just the little Queen of the household. But so far she's been quite good.

Have a good week and I'll chat over December Countdown!

    • Thanks Maya! That is lovely to hear. Glad you enjoy stopping by our little corner of the blogosphere!

The Night Circus is a must read. Sure you will love it!

  10. Ooh birthday looks fun! And Hitchhiker's Guide party? Oh, I get it now. 🙂

Sorry to hear about the upsurge. It's bad here too but the vaccine looks like it's rolling soon so maybe… hope?

Our cat (the mischievous one) needs to take a lesson from your crew about leaving the tree alone! He's been messing with a little one we have up, and been batting at ornaments on the big one too. Want a new cat?? 🙂

    • Wha ha ha!!! No thanks Greg, I have my hands full as it is! Just give the cat her own tree, sure she would love it. And still go and raid your tree…

Vaccine in Africa is estimated at about 2 years from now. So I don't know what's happening or where we are heading. Just try to stay safe and responsible as much as possible!

    • Oh no that's a long time. They're starting to roll it out here but of course it will take months and months to get everyone. And of course overseas I'm sure there are different timelines in each country. I hope your cases go down though and that you stay safe!

I think we're making progress on keeping our little troublemaker out of the trees. 🙂

    • That's good to hear Greg! The Grinch just stole Christmas last night as all our beaches are closed and we are under curfew again.

Luckily I still have stacks to read!

    • So glad to hear that you've liked the book! Mixed reviews all over, but I am still looking forward to reading it!

Thanks for stopping by and I hope you will have a good week.

  11. I cracked up the minutes I saw this post. I know I'm always in for a good read when I come to visit. I also have the Moon is Missing and I'm looking forward to listening to that audio. I've been meaning to watch Rebecca but have yet to get to it. Enjoy your reading week!

    • Hi Laura! Aaaah thank you!! We aim to please you know. Glad you know where to stop if you need a chuckle or two.

Rebecca is really worth the watch and I am looking forward to The Moon is Missing. Might only get to it in the New Year though. Quite a few books to still get through.

  12. Happy Birthday! So glad that Elza didn't wind up in cat jail. Those books all look good especially A Cat's Guide to Bonding with Dragons. Enjoy and have a great week!

    • Hi Yvonne! Thanks so much! I am looking forward to A cat's Guide to bonding with Dragons and so is Elza. We will make sure to share with your two new fur babies!

  13. A big happy birthday. Nothing like champagne for a birthday.

It's crazy here. I'm still reeling from seeing that yesterday our Rotary Club held a Christmas Market across the street from me. Really? And we are at our highest levels since the pandemic began.

I love the idea of a Christmas countdown. Maybe next year I will join in.

Elza, I'm relieved you have not gone to cat jail for Christmas tree offenses, and I'm delighted to see that you shall soon be doing some cat reviewing. Not enough cat reviewing, I think.

    • Elza is behaving very well this whole holiday so far. I think she is just so grateful that I am at home and she can cuddle as much as she wants. In fact, all my cats are in the house this past week!

It's crazy here as well. There are strong rumors that they want to close the beaches. I do not see the logic behind that at all. Rather close the mall.

I'll just stay at home with my cats and my books. Definitely a much safer option.

  14. Happy Birthday ? I’m glad you were able to celebrate in some small way despite the dreaded creep of ‘C’ .looks like you have plenty of great books to keep you busy should lockdown go into effect.

Wishing you a great reading week, stay well!

    • Hi Shelleyrae, we haven't had any confirmation yet, but it does seem as if they plan on closing the beaches. Don't really see the logic in that.

But yes, I do have enough great books to keep me busy in the mean time!

Thanks for stopping by and I hope you will have a wonderful week.

  15. I love that your Christmas tree is still standing, haha. It sounds like you had a good week and got some great books! I just started a new book blog so I am just getting started again. I had a book blog before for many years. If you are interested I have a post on my blog. I hope you have a great week reading!
