The Sunday Post #40

Posted May 30, 2021 by elzaread in The Sunday Post / 36 Comments

Greetings you all! Can we not talk about my Mommy’s week, please? It was horrible. Covid scares, open battlefields at school, broken nails (yes, that is traumatic), a crappy book. The unhappiness is real here. But the worst was the Covid scare. One of my Mommy’s Teachers in the Special Needs section at school contracted the dreadful virus and all hell broke lose. And that’s after all necessary protocols were followed. For those of you who are, or were in teaching, you will know – it takes only teacher to tip the carefully packed apple cart. Where are the Centaurs when you need them.

No vaccines in sight here in good old South Africa for mere mortals like teachers, so school got closed until tomorrow. At least my Mommy’s Teacher Friend is not as sick as so many others were and she’s expected back at work in another week’s time.

Let’s talk books, reality sucks.

Adding to the Litter

So glad we figured out that Reading Reality is now hosting Stacking the Shelves. Thanks to everyone who pointed us in the right direction!

We got two new books for review from Lola’s Blog Tours. We love reviewing for Lola, the books are always fun and she is a very nice and helpful tour organizer.

From Bookbub and Kindle Daily Deals:

It’s only end of May, but I’ve already decided what my Mommy’s reading challenge will be next year. She might not like it and I won’t tell you yet. The patience of a cat, never underestimate it.

Scratching the Blog Pole

We didn’t do a Sunday Post last week, so we are two weeks behind. Don’t worry, you haven’t missed much. We only had four posts.
1. Top Ten Tuesday – The New Mary Higgins Clark in 10 Sentences (Ghostwriter Elza) We had lots of fun with this post and we were very happy to see that you also enjoyed it!
2. Friday Fives with Book Blogger Hop and Friendly Fill-Ins – we made some fun new friends with the Friendly Fill-Ins, will definitely become a regular. Because Felines. No other reasons necessary.
3. Wondrous Words Wednesday – Lackadaisical – I still vote for my Mommy to be a bit lazier. But then again, what if she never snaps out of it again? Rather stick with the busy bee.
4. Weekend Book Friends – Featuring our latest read, The Rose Code.

On the Couch

Currently Reading

There’s nothing like reading a really good book when life gets you down. Both A Gentleman in Moscow and The Rose Code are amazing reads and just what my Mommy needed. We only have about 10% left of Reserved for Murder. Watch this space for a review somewhere this week.

Currently Watching

We finished all the seasons of The Good Place and although I suspect some people of certain faiths and denominations might have a lot to say about it, we loved it.
Last night we watched Frozen. Because yes, my Mommy should let it go. I think it helped a lot.
Hope you will all have a wonderful week and remember to link up to our lovely hosts Debbie @ The ReaderBuzz and Kimberley @ Caffeinated Reviewer.
Lots of Love,

  1. I'm so sorry to read you've had such a hard week. I really hope you'll get vaccinated soon. I'm a nurse and still haven't gotten mine either.
    Your new books look wonderful.
I hope this week is better for you. Have a great one and happy reading.

  2. I am so sorry to hear it was a pretty rotten week for you last week, Mareli – I really hope this week is going better for you! ? I am very lucky that I am now fully vaccinated, as staff working in special needs schools were prioritised here in the UK. I hope it won't be too long till you will get vaccinated and that your school friend will recover quickly. ?

  3. Sounds like a hard week there. So sorry about the Covid scare. Yikes. Any idea when you will be able to get a vaccine shot there? I hope supplies arrive for more! I have a copy of the Rose Code but don't think I'll be able to get to it till later in the summer. Enjoy.

  4. I loved loved loved The Good Place, and I am so happy to meet another fan of the show. I was going through a tough time when I started watching Good Place, and it was the world's best antidote. Thanks for also sharing the Umbridge caricature, and so very right. I hope things get better soon *hugs*

  5. I have been eyeing The Rose Code, and I'm now curious about The Good Place.

Enjoy your week and your books/viewing, and thanks for visiting my blog.

    • It's a bit of a problem yes, Gayathri. But the Johnson & Johnson vaccine and the Pfizer one is currently being administered. Let's hope it proofs to be effective.

  6. I'm so sorry about the Covid scare. I sure hope you guys can get a vaccine soon. It's so crazy. Here in the U.S. they are giving away prizes and money, etc to convince people to take the vaccine. Such an injustice.

I hope you get some good reading time in. I hear the Gentleman in Moscow is really good. I have plans to get to it this summer. Love hearing more positive reviews of it.

I hope you have a better week.

    • Hi Heather! I know, it's crazy how the vaccine affects lives in different parts of the world. We wish we could at least be eligible for registration yet…
I've heard a rumour that teachers might be next in line for registration. Let's hope and pray!

    • It's weekend again and I only get time to reply to all my message today. Week was much better, but still crazy busy.

Hope you had a good week and that you will have a good weekend to look forward to.

  7. I'm sorry about the terrible. That's awful about the Covid scare. I hope everything is okay and it didn't spread. I hope this is a better week for you!

    • Hi Yvonne! No new Covid spreads and my teacher friend is luckily doing much better and will be at work on Monday.

We are being very careful at the moment as we can't afford to have school closed again.

      Thanks for all your concerns!

  8. The Good Place is such a good show! If you liked it, I think you will also enjoy Schitt's Creek, have you watched that?

I am shocked that South Africa is not vaccinating teachers. Very sad.

    • Hi there Helen! I'm watching Schitt's Creek, but my husband doesn't like it much.

There are rumors that the next group of people who will be vaccinated in SA, will be teachers. Let's hold thumps!

  9. Oh dear, I hope there is no further spread at school. Victoria is back in lockdown this week after it escaped quarantine, luckily our region remains Covid free still.

Wishing you a much better week, and good reading.

    • Hi there Shelley-Rae! Luckily, no further spreads at school and my teacher friend is doing good. She will be back at school on Monday.

We are on high alert and taking all necessary precautions now again, winter is upon us and everyone just gets a bit sick this time of year. So let's just be as safe as possible.

    • It's a week later and by my response time, I guess you can see it was a hectic week once again! But it was at least a good week and I am reading for the weekend. Also a bit busy, but it's okay – all fun things!

  10. I am a teacher and am thankful every day that we were able to get vaccinated in March over spring break. Wednesday was our last student day so Thursday and Friday were spent packing up classrooms. I can not overstate how relieved I am to be done with this school year. I worry greatly for those still in school and hope there are no more scares at your school and that the teacher recovers quickly.

    • Hi there Sarah! As you can see, and I know you can relate – it's been a bit hectic this week! Luckily my teacher friend is recovering well and she will be back at school on Monday. So grateful for that.

There are rumors that teachers will be the next "group" to register for the vaccine, let's hold thumps!

I hope you will enjoy your summer break and that there will be some great reads waiting for you.

  11. Oh I'm so sorry to hear about the Covid scare! Be safe!! I wish the vaccine situation there was better, since we have a supply here now and people are refusing them! Sigh. america. Ayways…

I didn't know about Stacking the Shelves. Good to know…

Hope your weekend is filled with lots of kittie treats!

    • Hi Greg! And it's weekend again… But at least this week was a whole lot better and my teacher friend is doing good and will be back at school on Monday.

Yes, the vaccine nightmare. If only we lived in a perfect world. But then again, we wouldn't have needed a vaccine then! This is life and I guess we're stuck with it. It's luckily not all bad!

    • Hi Diane! At least the passed week has been a whole lot better and I am looking forward to the weekend after a long, but productive week!

  12. Oh, wow! Reality does suck. I really hope they get vaccines for everyone soon. But you do have some awesome reads there! I’ve heard wonderful things about Kate Quinn books. I’m sure you will enjoy it! Stay safe ❤️

    • School is probably going to be open/close, open/close for the next couple of months. But like you say, there are always books to comfort!

  13. We loved The Good Place when we watched it last year, and we liked it so much that we decided to watch it again this year.

Gentleman in Moscow is good medicine for the spirit. I'm reading Girl With the Louding Voice and the new Richard Powers book right now, and they are just what I need right now, too.

Let's hope that your teacher friend recovers quickly and that no one else gets sick. I'm vaccinated, and I'm trying to get out more (two graduation parties and a funeral this weekend) but emotionally it's tough.

    • So glad to hear that you've also enjoyed The Good Place! I loved it! I'm listening to A Gentleman in Moscow on audible and I'm so glad I chose that platform. Lovely to listen to it. I did buy a physical book as well, because I know it's one of those books I would love to have on my shelf.

I've only heard good things about The Girl with the Louding Voice and think I'll see if I can get hold of a copy.

Yes, emotions throughout the last year has really been a bit tough. We'll never know our old normal again, and that's okay. The world should evolve. We'll evolve too. That's the way the world works.

    • Hi there AJ! Yes, it was a bummer of a week. But the next week will hopefully be a whole lot better.

Hope you are well? I'll hop over now and see for myself!

  14. Sorry to hear about the teacher at your school. Glad she will be well soon. A Gentleman in Moscow was a wonderful read for our book club! I have the Rose Code on my to be read list! Have a better week coming up!

    • Hi Harvee! I'm sure the upcoming week will be better, isn't that how life works?

Thanks for stopping by and I hope you get to read The Rose Code soon!
