The Sunday Post #54

Posted November 14, 2021 by elzaread in The Sunday Post, Uncategorized / 22 Comments

Greetings you guys! How has life been treating you lately? Who agrees that this year can start the countdown to reset any day now?

My Mommy was wondering if we should join this year’s Ho-Ho-Ho Readathon that kicks off on Thursday. She finally made her mind up and yes, we will be joining in the Christmas cheer. |We even have a short list of books we hope to read this season.  It’s time for the Christmas Spirit. Who cares if it’s way to early. Who else is joining?

South Africa has made international headlines once again, this time on the literacy front (for a welcome change). Lets start with the good news.

South African author, Damon Galgut, wins the Booker Prize 2021 with is novel, The Promise.

And the sad news for the whole world, but especially for South Africans today, is the passing of Wilbur Smith. My Mommy wasn’t the biggest fan of his work, but Daddy has read a few of his books and loved it. That is an amazing accomplishment. I know a lot of South Africans who don’t know books and authors very well, but here, in his home country, Wilbur Smith is a household name.  May he rest in peace.

I know we’ve been absent a lot lately, but the December Holidays are just around the corner and we promise to drive you crazy then! Let’s see what books we’ve acquired lately.

Adding to the Litter

For Review: The Automobile Assassination by M.J. Porter. Thanks to The History Quill Book Club. We are looking forward to this one!

Book Club: My Mommy is usually the main reader of her Book Club. Everyone always asks her what book to choose. But lately, she’s been a bit behind with her Book Club reads. So she only took one this month. And if she really doesn’t get to it, that’s okay too. It is her book in any case. The Dictionary of Lost Words by Pip Williams.

We won!!: Just look at the awesome book we won for our fun efforts with the 2021 Fraterfest Readathon. Thanks so much Kimberly, I think you’ve made a wonderful choice. A Bad Day for Sunshine by Darynda Jones.

Scratching the Blog Pole

Like I’ve said, we’ve been a bit absent. My Mommy has been busy at school and a few other important things at home. Like baking a cake for me. Friday was my adoption anniversary! I’ve now blessed my Mommy with 2 years of love and cuddles and of course, loads of blog inspirations.

You might have missed the following four posts:

Monday Bloopers #4 – A Spark of Light

Wondrous Words Wednesday – Asinine

Weekend Book Friends with The Dictionary of Lost Words

Book Review: Over my Dead Body by Jeffrey Archer

On the Couch

Currently Reading: We are busy with the sweetest book, Little Wanderers: The Everlasting Seasons. We hope to be done with it within the next day or two and will then tell you all about it. We are still listening to A Court of Thorns and Roses. Sure is something different! But we do understand all the hype. And we are just about done with Witches, Spiders & Schemes and our review will be up later this week. As always, we love visiting Destiny Falls!

Currently Watching: Not much. But apparently, as soon as we now press publish and she quickly pops a bucket of popcorn, Daddy wants to introduce her to Daniel Craig as James Bond. No, she hasn’t seen a single one. This can only be fun. And if I look at the man in question, I don’t think she’s going to mind at all.

We hope you will all have a wonderful week and let me know if me and my Mommy are the only people on this planet who has never seen Daniel Craig as James Bond. Remember to add your link to our lovely hosts and to visit each other!

  1. Oh my word Elza – how you have grown in two years! Your mummy is definitely missing out by not enjoying the Daniel Craig James Bond films – I watch them purely for the story of course 😉

    • elzaread

Hi Louise! She has grown yes! But she is but a wee little thing. With a huge attitude. 😉

We’ve watched Casino Royale last night and I’ve surprised myself by really enjoying it. Will watch the rest of them for sure!

  2. Happy adoption day to Elza! Such a cutie Elza is!

I was excited to hear about Damon Galgut and so sorry about Wilbur Smith. Both are new to me authors whose work I would like to give a try.

Pierce Brosnan and Daniel Craig are probably the only ones I have watched as Bond. I couldn’t care much for the others. My dad is a huge fan of the Bond movies so almost every Bond movie that I have watched were with him. Needless to say, not much of that has happened since I left home more than a decade ago. Makes me nostalgic for those times. Maybe I should plan a Bond movie watchathon when he is here next month.

Hi Athira! If you want to read Wilbur Smith, start with his earlier books. The Courtney series is quite good. I haven’t read Damon Galgut myself, but he must be good to have the Booker on his belt now!

We’ve watched Casino Royale last night and I have quite enjoyed it yes. I think a Bond movie watchathon with your dad is a wonderful idea!

Thanks for stopping by and have a wonderful week.

  3. Elza looks very happy to be there. Happy 2 years! Is she small for her age? It’s great news for SA that Galgut won the Booker! Congrats to all there. I hadn’t heard that Wilbur Smith had passed, how sad. I just went & read the obituary … it seems he was married 4 times … but very happy at the end. He had quite a life. Have a great week!

Hi Susan! Oh Elza is the queen of this house indeed. But I am terribly happy that she has been my reading partner for the last 2 years. She really only brings love and joy.

I haven’t read anything by Galgut yet, I know it was the second time he got nominated for the Booker Prize. So I am really happy for him!

Wilbur Smith had a very interesting life yes! His life story reads like one of his novels. Perhaps that’s why he could write such wonderful adventures!

Thanks for stopping by and I hope you will have a good week ahead!

  4. Have fun with the readathon! I don’t have a lot of Christmas themed books on my list to read, but I might fit in one or two sometime before Christmas. I look forward to hear your thoughts on Witches, Spiders & Schemes, I really enjoy that series! Have a great week!

Hi Lola! I also didn’t have a lot of Christmassy books on my TBR, so I had to get inventive. If I’m actually going to manage getting to it, we’ll have to see..!!

I’m done with Witches, Spiders & Schemes and will have my review up and ready within the next day or two.

      Have a good week Lola!

  5. I’m thinking of doing the HoHoHo as well if I can get my act together and get some Christmasy books lined up! I hope it goes well for you.

Enjoy your Bond-a-thon! I’ve seen the first three Craig movies but I’ve been slipping on the last couple…

I’ve put a few together and even took a few from school for Ho-ho-ho. The middle grade reads goes quickly. I do have about 3 adult ones as well, but still struggling to get an audiobook. Thinking of Hogfather. Haven’t read a Terry Pratchett in YEARS.

We’ve watched the first Bond with Daniel Craig last night and I’ve actually enjoyed it!

      Have a good week Greg!

We’ve watched Casino Royale last night and it was good. I think I’ll watch the rest of them too.

Have a great week and thanks for stopping by.

Hi Ronyell! I love playing around on CANVA. It’s part of the fun of blogging for me! We’ve watched Casino Royale last night and it was good. A bit of a darker side than I expected, but I actually like that.

      Have a good week!

Hi there Lisa! I am listening to A court of thorns and roses on audible and I am enjoying it. Don’t know if I would have “read” them though… I’ve read Wilbur Smith when I was much younger, perhaps even too young. In remembrance, I will probably read one of his books.

Thanks for stopping by and I hope you will have a good week!

    • elzaread

Hi Debbie! I also haven’t read anything by Damon Galgut. Will have to change that.

Yes, Elza has brought nothing but love and joy. Little Madam, by so what.

A court of Thorns and Roses are something different. If your brother in law enjoys fantasy with weird creatures and the fae, he might enjoy it. I do like Maas’ writing style.

      Have a good week Debbie!

Hi Lisa! Happy birthday to your pup! Elza got some salmon and I baked a pink cake with white frosting. More for us though!

Thanks for stopping by and I hope you will have a wonderful week k.
