The Sunday Post #58

Posted January 9, 2022 by elzaread in The Sunday Post / 49 Comments

Oh what a beautiful morning! The sun is out and shining brightly on our little coastal town. My Mommy went for a nice long walk on the beach and then she sat in the sun reading her book. With a hat and sunblock. I believe she’ now just about ready for the new school year to start. Teachers back at school tomorrow and students on Wednesday.

Nothing much to tell you on our side regarding the past week. Trying to enjoy the last days of holidays, prepping for school, doing some gardening. Oh yes! And we finally tackled the right sidebar. Everybody happy? What should still be added or removed? Still no feedback from Bloglovin’ regarding the new domain, but we do still keep our profile open for the time being.

What have you been up to?

adding to the litter

My Mommy’s New Year kind-of-resolution to not buy/go slow on buying new books, didn’t last very long. At least they were both on sale and it really borders on a crime to not buy a book on sale.

We also got our review copy of the latest Destiny Falls instalment to be published early in February. Yea! Can’t wait to get my claws in.

We had a good blogging week and my Mommy just realised once again what a lovely the community the Bookish Web is. People really are eager to help and to keep you on track. My Mommy mentioned in a comment that she left on Ellen & Emmie’s blog, 15 and Meowing, that she thinks the story Ellen told would make a lovely book. Ellen send us an email saying that it is actually a storybook already and she send us a copy. How sweet is that! We love people like Ellen. Not only is she a fabulous blogger, but she also has a huge heart for the feline species and support numerous causes and charities. Thank you Ellen…

Scratching the Blog Pole

It might be the brand new diary wherein my Mommy can now plan her week and month ahead, but we had a good blogging week. No promises that it will last, but here’s to good intentions! If you’ve missed any of our posts, here’s the links:

Monday Bloopers – Good Intentions. We talked about all those books we should have read for review in 2021, but didn’t get to. My Mommy is hanging her head in shame. I’m just sitting here thinking what the fuzz is. She’ll get to it. Eventually. In my 6th or 7th life.

Wondrous Words Wednesday – Cromulent. A word of the year. Have you ever done it? We’ve never done it before. So let’s start with a word that isn’t actually a recognized word yet. Sounds perfectly fine to me.

Library Card January 2022 & Weekend Book Friends. We are really going to try our best to stick to our monthly Library Card this year. So far so good. Although there is a Kindle read creeping up that is not listed. She forgot about the Kindle. How terribly sad. No wonder the thing keeps stalling more and more.

Book Review – Slip-Stitched & Slayed by Tracey Drew. We have two favorite feline series. The one is Destiny Falls and the other one is Knitty Kitty. How wonderful to have them both mentioned in one post! We have read the latest one in December already, we are just a bit behind with the review. But it’s up for your enjoyment now!

Love and Retribution – Review will be up in a couple of days. Marilyn – you can watch for our review on Instagram later today.

Currently Reading

We are still listening to A Court of Thorns and Roses. We’ve actually started to lose interest, but with my Mommy’s beach walks, she found interest again. Just take it for the fairytale it is.

We’ve just started with The Dangers of an Ordinary Night, but I think it’s going to be a good one.

We got Lucifer’s Game on the Pigeonhole, just to realize that we have it on Netgalley as well. Brilliant! Two birds with one stone. A lot of history in there, but we love it.

Question of the Week

In our Friday post, my Mommy mentioned that she still reads faster in her mother tongue, Afrikaans (did you see our lovely translate button?!), but she still reads more in English. A few of you were amazed with the reading in two languages on a constant basis. Nothing strange to us though! We grew up like this. But! My Mommy is actually thinking of learning a third language this year. The dice fell on Polish. Because Daddy wants to go to Poland and apparently the charm of a fluffy white kitten will get you nowhere if you don’t speak the language.

Our question is: What are the best language apps out there to learn a new language? Anyone out there speaking Polish and willing to give some advice?

That’s all from us this week, remember to link up to all our lovely hosts and to visit your fellow bloggers for a quick shoutout. You never know, your message might be all they need today. Not everyone has a cat you know.

Hi Greg! Glad you like the sidebar. I’m quite happy too! Will probably tweak here and there still, but for now I’m good!

Oh don’t say buy all the books…. I literally went out this afternoon between school meetings to go buy the whole Bridgerton series… It’s on a huge sale! I sommer used it for my TTT!

Have a great week my friend!

    • elzaread

Hi Anne! Also glad to bring a smile, a smirk or a giggle.

We are good yes! Hope you are too.

  2. I love the Polish joke! And also your categories within this meme, I don’t think I had paid too much attention to them before, hilarious,
My library has a free program called Transparent Language. I have used it for Russian, quite good.
Check your public library, they probably have some type of similar free online resource available in their database from your home. Check also on youtube, there are so many free resources now as well.

Hi Emma! I always aim to have fun with my Sunday Post, hence the quirky headers. I actually want to make graphics too, still need to get to it. But glad to hear you find it entertaining.

We don’t actually have a library to speak of…. But I’ll make a plan with a nice app or so!

  3. We’re having lovely sunny weather here, too. The Love Hypothesis was so good! Can’t imagine reading, in a second language. I only speak and read English. Good for you!

    • elzaread

Hi Rachel! Glad to hear you’ve enjoyed The Love Hypothesis. Word on the street is good, so I hope I’ll enjoy it too.

      Have a lovely week!

  4. A walk on the beach sounds so nice! I hope you have a good week back at school tomorrow. I can see why you couldn’t resist splurging a little on books despite trying to cut back. The books do all sound good! I wish I had a good recommendation for you on a course to learn a new language. I do wish you luck with learning Polish though! I hope you have a great week and enjoy your reading!

School is crazy and I LOVE it. So great to actually have parent evening and “open day” in the library. Thanks for all the well wishes!

I have so many great suggestions for the Polish, so I think we’ll be okay!

  5. Diane

Wow Mommy had a busy week; glad the weather was nice – snow and freezing rain here a few days. Speaking of Polish – 100% here but I know very little. My parents would only speak it when they did not want us to know what they were saying LOL – did you know there are swears in Polish too? LOL Have a great week.

    • elzaread

Hi Diane! Oh my greatness!!! I can’t believe you are polish! I believe all languages have a couple of a really good swear words. One day I’ll make a post on all my favourite Afrikaans swear words.

Have a wonderful week ahead and take care of yourself.

    • elzaread

I love summertime! Definitely more of a summer baby.
We are also back at school and I can’t believe a whole year is ahead of us. It will be good!

Good luck with all your 2022 endeavours and take care.

    • elzaread

      Hi Lisa!

So glad you could stop by. You should check out the whole Destiny Falls series. Such a fun series with a very sassy feline. I also hope to get to The Love Hypothesis too. Think it can be a fun read for sure.

I hope you had a wonderful Christmas time and that you are ready for the new year.

    • elzaread

Hi Yvonne! Yea for Jousting & Justice! I am looking forward to reading it.

Have a good week Yvonne and have a wonderful week.

  6. Learning a new language is hard and I wish you all the luck!! I don’t really know of any language apps over than Duolingo…you could look into that one?! Have a great week.

Duolingo does seem to be the popular choice. I will try that one and also think of trying to get some kiddies books and see if that might help! That’s after I’ve learned all the letters of course.

Thanks for stopping by Cindy and I hope you will have a wonderful week.

  7. Thank you for the shout out. 🙂 I am so impressed you are fluent in 2 languages. Polish is one I have always wanted to learn as I am half Polish ( my mom is 100%as is my hubby). XO

Hi Ellen! How interesting is that! If I learn a couple of words, I will let you know and you can ask your hubby to check if I’m on the right track.

Thanks for having such a lovely and interactive blog! I love coming to visit you.

  8. Sitting in the sun reading sounds wonderful! I like the look of that Dickens & Christie cozy mystery series you bought.

    Have a great week!

    • elzaread

      Hi Gretchen !

I am also looking forward to The Dickens and Christie box set. I have only been reading cozies for about a year, but I really do love the genre.

  9. I am here after a long time and I love what you have done to your blog. It looks so elegant and inviting. Also I loved Love hypothesis. Have a great week ahead.

    • elzaread

I am so glad to see you back on the blogosphere and that you approve of the changes that happened on our blog. We love all the changes, but still have one or two things to tweak. Rome wasn’t built in a day!

Good luck with your year and I am looking forward to seeing all your new posts.

  10. I still remember the prep work for school, whew! Lol, I enlisted my mom’s help one time to help with going away gifts for the students.

    • elzaread

      Hi Trin!

Yes, prepping for school is a lot of work indeed. But this year will hopefully be a bit better as I won’t be as busy at school. Very relieved about that!

Have a good week and thanks for stopping by.

    • elzaread

I hope so too Harvee! If I can just get my review schedules up to date, I’ll be fine.

Have a good week and thanks for stopping by.

    • elzaread

Thanks Erin! Also happy with it for sure!

Hope you are well and that you will have a good week ahead!

  11. I’ve spent a lot of time with various language apps. I was born speaking English, and I spent a lot of years learning Spanish. Later I took on French and Italian. I plan to practice my French this year. My favorite language tool is Rosetta Stone.

I bought several books this week, too. They were on sale. I could not resist either.

Your blog looks beautiful. I like your sidebar work!

  12. I hope you enjoyed the last week of your holiday. Your sidebar looks great. I also got Jousting and Justice and am already halfway through reading it, it’s a fun one so far!

I can read in both my mother tongue Dutch as well as English, but I only read books in English. I am not sure which is faster, but I assume English at this point as I so rarely read anything in Dutch. Good luck with learning Polish! I don’t have any recommendations for language learning apps, but some people I know recommend Duolingo.

    I hope you’ll have a good week!

Hi Lola! I can’t remember if I knew you were Dutch? So close to Afrikaans and shared history.

I definitely read faster in Afrikaans, but still read more English.

I’ll start with the new Destiny Falls Mystery in the next week or so. Really want to make sure my review books are on schedule this year.

I just need to find a nice app and then I’ll start with the Polish.

Have a good week and thanks for stopping by!
