The Sunday Post #85

Posted October 23, 2022 by elzaread in The Sunday Post / 34 Comments

Greetings you guys! It’s the last week of October and I guess that makes it Halloween week? My Mommy says she always feels like the odd one out here in SA and especially at school during this season. Halloween is not a seasonal festivity here in SA and seeing that my Mommy works at a Christian School, everyone looks at her strangely when she gets all excited about ghosts and horror books during October.

Lucky for her, there are fun reading challenges like Fraterfest to take part in! How’s it going with your Fraterfest Readathon this year?

We only have a couple of hours left and I know we probably could have done better – but we did have loads of fun with the books we did manage to read during the past 10 days.

We aren’t quite finished with The House on the Lake, but we’ll finish it up eventually. Secrets and Seashells at Rainbow Bay might not really have qualified for Fraterfest as the ghosts weren’t really high on the fear factor scale. The House on Needless Street ticked all the boxes though! We’ve listened to it, but I think my Mommy should perhaps rather read it as well. Who wants to chat about that book? Oh and For Your Own Good – we can chat about that one as well. Would love to hear your thoughts!

The rest of our lives have been busy the last two weeks, as it usually is this time of the year. Why is the last term of school and the last two months of the year always a mad house? With less than 2 months to go before school ends for the year, my Mommy’s days are long and jam packed. Sometimes literally.

We are trying our best not to buy any new books at the moment, we are more than a bit behind on our must-read lists this year, so let’s try to lessen the pressure here. The only books being bought, are new books for the kids at school. Updates to follow, I believe that will have to be a post all on it’s own.

Apologies for not being as present on the blog the last couple of weeks, if only I can grow human thumps, you would be able to see us way more. I do have some time on hand and spend hours in the home library where the computer is blinking for more attention on a daily basis as well. Thankfully we had a few blog tours and reviews happening that at least kept us going. If you missed any, here’s a few links:

Not sure what the new week entitles, but hopefully we can get to Top Ten Tuesday and Wednesday it will be time for Wondrous Words again. Check out the link in our sidebar if you want to join in for Wondrous Words.

We got a bit distracted with Fraterfest in the loop and now we need to get up to date with our review books. All three of these are up for review this coming week and we aren’t done with any of them. Sigh…. I honestly don’t know why my Mommy does this to us. She needs to stop over extending us so much.

Luckily we are enjoying them mostly, so now we just need to get reading.

Before we go and finish our books, a quick question for you this week: Amazon reviews – who else have been having problems with reviewing on Amazon lately? I did read through their review policies carefully once again and I guess it has to do with that limited $50 spending thingy. It might not be a lot on US terms, but in SA terms, that’s over a R1000! So I guess I won’t be eligible to review on Amazon anymore. How upset should we be? Anyone else who doesn’t review on Amazon?

Okay, let’s go read our books. Wishing you all and our lovely hosts a lovely and healthy week ahead. Our hosts:  Debbie @ Readerbuzz with The Sunday Salon, Kimberly @ Caffeinated Reviewer with The Sunday Post and Marlene @ Reading Reality with Stacking the Shelves.

  1. Halloween was HUGE when I was growing up. My mom had to buy a ridiculous amount of candy because there were at least 300 kids at our house each year. Since I’ve been an adult I’ve had very few kids knock on the door. I thought it was because we lived out of town but now I live in town and still only have a few, and they are my daughter in law’s brother’s kids. I think Halloween is so sad now.

I’m not doing Fraterfest this year but it’s always fun to see what what everyone else is reading! What do you think of the Cleo Coyle series? The House on the Lake looks terrifying! Hopefully the end of school won’t be too chaotic – Elza needs her attention! Have a wonderful week!

  3. I do reviews on Amazon, but we spend a LOT of money on Amazon. Living in a somewhat rural area, we purchase many things that most people would buy in a store. I know the publishers like it when your review on Amazon, but Goodreads is the main place that publishers want the reviews.
I’ve also been trying to cut down on my books to read, it’s hard, but, like you, I have too many and it can get stressful.

  4. Thank goodness my kids are grown and we’re in a neighborhood without many kids so we don’t get trick-or-treaters. It was never a big deal in our family. BUT, I do love a good creepy book but I don’t limit myself to only Oct. I’ll read them anytime. 🙂 I think we readers tend to overcommit to reading goals lots of times…..we can just do the best we can do. Reading should always be fun!!
    Thanks for stopping by!

  5. Hello. Those books look like good Halloween reads. Spooky covers. I guess I don’t review on Amazon but I review on Goodreads which sort of helps me keep track of what I read too. Hope you have a fun Halloween week … even though it might not be big in SA. Boo!

  6. I love your Halloween banner! I have a friend who went to a catholic school growing even he’s not catholic. When he graduated, though, a few of their ideals rubbed off on him, like not being thrilled about celebrating Halloween. I hope you have fun celebrating even though it feels like you’re the only one!

    • Hi Lisa!

If I buy on Amazon, it’s only Kindle reads. Shipment to SA is way to expensive and I can rather buy the books locally.

I guess it’s more a foreigner problem than US citizens and I don’t blame them, we’ll just have to make another plan.

Good to hear from you again! Hope you are doing well.

  7. I don’t ever review on Amazon, for some reason. I’ve heard different people have issues and just never wanted to mess with it. Glad fraterfest went well! Looks like you had some good picks for spooky reads. 🙂

    • Hi Greg!

I’ve actually ran into a similar problem about two years ago, but then the Rand/Dollar exchange wasn’t so crazy and it wasn’t that big a deal to spend $50. Now it’s just ridiculous, so I won’t be reviewing on Amazon for a while I guess.

    • Hi Shelleyrae!

We don’t have an Amazon SA…. There were rumors of Amazon coming to SA a while back, but not sure if that will ever happen. I’m not going to fret about it too much, there’s enough other fun sites to review on as well.

Thanks for the visit and I hope you are having a good week so far!

  8. I love your Halloween banner! I get excited about Halloween. Here in the UK Halloween is a thing and has been gradually getting bigger, but it doesn’t seem as big as it is in America. My mum hosts a Halloween tea which is quite exciting. My 4 year old son is getting excited for it. I don’t think that he understands that it entails strange looking food, but we shall see!

We are now on half term here so my son and partner are home for the week.

The Ghost and the Stolen Tears looks good.

Have a great week next week!

    • Hallo Emily!

I think having kids during all the seasonal festivities, are the most fun! We don’t have kids, so I just rely on the kids at school. You must send us some pictures of your Mom’s Halloween tea and of your little one enjoying Halloween!

Thanks for the compliment on the banner – I also love it! LOL!! Guess I need to make a new one this weekend for Thanksgiving….

I have only started with The Ghost and the Stolen Tears, but it it is going to be a fun one, that I can see!

    • Hi there Cindy! Every month I feel like complaining, but funny enough – I normally get through. I do want to take on less review books next year and try to focus more on books I already have on my shelf. I don’t think I’ve read anything on my Kindle this year but review books!

Let’s see what the new year resolutions will bring.

Thanks for the visit and I hope you will have a wonderful week ahead!

  9. Wow, that’s an interesting thing about Amazon. I don’ t have prime so I don’t shop as much on Amazon, although I know I’ve spent over one hundred on the site in the last year alone. I read reviews a lot so they should consider that customers feedback is important.

    • Buying from Amazon in SA is very, very expensive! The postage are ridiculous and then you have no clear guarantee that your parcel will arrive. The South African postal service is a joke. So accept for the few Kindle books I will buy every now and then, I don’t shop there. I guess I can’t really blame them for review restrictions.

Thanks for the visit Trin, hope you will have a great week!

  10. I generally only post book reviews on my blog and Goodreads. And I’m not interested in reading a lot of books people send me for reviews. I try to review everything I read but when Cybils season hits with over 200 books to read…it gets dicey.

We have missed seeing you around, Mareli. I’m glad that the reason we haven’t seen much of you is that you have been busy.

    • Hi Debbie!

I have to be honest, I have been stalking you a bit and noticed that you only post on your blog and Goodreads. I do believe it is much easier!! I love doing blog tours, but perhaps next year I must start to do only a few spotlight tours and just read whatever I want and have – there are loads of unread books on my shelves!

I am not going to stress myself up about Amazon, there are bigger things to worry about.

Yes, it really has been busy! My husband was away (to Paris of all places!!! YESS! He did bring prezzies) and between work, household and a sleepover – blogging wasn’t high on the list. But I hope to catch up a bit this week.

Have a good week Debbie and happy reading!!

  11. mae

Sorry to hear that you are deprived of Halloween celebrations. Our neighborhood is very thoroughly decorated, and the giant pumpkins have already been delivered to the house where these monster vegetables are featured every October! I hope you have a little bit of fun!

    • This was my third year taking part in Fraterfest and this was the first year I didn’t actually plan it out before the time! It’s just been a crazy time all over. But it was still fun.

Thanks for stopping by! I hope you will have a wonderful week ahead.

    • Hi there Harvee! October is the only time that I actually read thrillers. Or the real spooky once at least. So much fun always!

Thanks for stopping by and I hope you will have a great week!
