Throwback Thursday #3 – The Girl who saved the King of Sweden

Posted November 5, 2020 by elzaread in Throwback Thursday / 14 Comments

It’s Thursday and guess what? I am right on time with this post! It’s raining a bit here and I won’t be surprised if it is because we actually managed to be on time with publication for a change. If I manage to have my Six Degrees of Separation post out by Saturday, you can expect a thunderstorm.

I know my last one went out last week, but that was for last month. But you never know, I might manage another one later this month as well. I will update you on the weather patterns as well.

There are so many spins on the idea of Throwback Thursday, but I still like Davida’s idea the most:

  • The Chocolate Lady’s #Throwback Thursday takes place on the Thursday before the first Saturday of every month. Yes, there is a linky and it will remain open until she uploads the new one. Thank Goodness. My first and last sometimes gets very confused.
  • Your post must highlight one of your previously published book reviews and Davida encourages other participants to do the same.
  • Add the link to your post and remember to link back to The Chocolate Lady’s Book Blog And do not forget to #ThrowbackThursday!
With our previous post, we’ve made the decision to combine Throwback Thursday with  Books from the Backlog, hosted by Carole’s Random Life of Books. This worked very well, so we are still combining these two features. By working well, I mean that my Mommy actually spend some time on her TBR shelf and we have a few game-plans up our tails.
But let’s start with Throwback Thursday and then talk about Books from the Backlog.
Today we will feature:

This was my Mommy’s third Book Review and it was first published on the 23rd of April 2016. You can read her full review if you click on the image of the book cover. This was a fun read and my Mommy says she can remember how much fun she had when writing this review. She says she enjoyed poking the dragon with this review. I went through it last night and decided to add some questions and answers to this feature:

  1. When was this review first published? – 23 April 2016.
  2. Did you have any idea what you were doing? – Still a novice, but I did start reading other reviews and got a few tips and ideas.
  3. Will you re-write this review? – No. It was way to much fun the first time.
  4. Did you tweak this review? – A bit yes. I’ve added the top section with the book information.
  5. Will you re-read the book? For sure, yes!
  6. Will you recommend others to read this review? Yes. I think as a South African, I brought one or two “homely” and funny elements in.
Now for  Books from the Backlog. I believe there are a lot of reasons why cats’ years need to be counted in 7 human years. I am one year old and I can already tell you one:  A feline can make less mistakes and unfulfilled promises in one year than your average human can do in 7 years. Within a year, I’ve learned not to listen when my Mommy says “This is the plan and we are going to stick to it”. I just flick my tail when she says things like that. But apparently, the game-plan for Books from the Backlog is to start with number 1 on the toppling TBR list and work our way through. I can promise you, this will not be our reality. But let’s give the woman the benefit of the doubt. She did start with number 1 last week and low and behold – she is actually featuring Number 2 this week:

The Aviator’s Wife by Melanie Benjamin

When Anne Morrow, a shy college senior with hidden literary aspirations, travels to Mexico City to spend Christmas with her family, she meets Colonel Charles Lindbergh, fresh off his celebrated 1927 solo flight across the Atlantic. Enthralled by Charles’s assurance and fame, Anne is certain the aviator has scarcely noticed her. But she is wrong. Charles sees in Anne a kindred spirit, a fellow adventurer, and her world will be changed forever. The two marry in a headline-making wedding. In the years that follow, Anne becomes the first licensed female glider pilot in the United States. But despite this and other major achievements, she is viewed merely as the aviator’s wife. The fairy-tale life she once longed for will bring heartbreak and hardships, ultimately pushing her to reconcile her need for love and her desire for independence, and to embrace, at last, life’s infinite possibilities for change and happiness.

The D.E.A.R. Book Club Ladies gathered at our house again on Monday night, and Mommy remembered that one of the DEARS brought this book to Book Club a year or two ago. A quick phone call later and now this book is lying on the coffee table waiting to be read this month. So yea to Mommy. Two down, 484 491 books to go (she bought new books today at the second-hand Book Shop and yesterday on BookBub). Unless she stops working, or take more holidays, that TBR is still at an estimate of 8 years to completion. I will then be 56 in human years and my Mommy not too far from it.
What books are on your backlog that you know you still want to read? Did you discard any of them lately? If you want to share some of your earlier reviews with us, please do so! We would love to read them.
It’s almost weekend. Hang tight!
Lots of Love,

Elza

    • Hi Heather, it really is a great idea and I love how it helps you to get sorted. Especially if you're like me and need to sort out things from a previous blog.
      Do join us!

  1. Jonasson's novel has such a cute cover–and I like the sound of it. I hope you enjoy The Aviator's Wife. I haven't read that one yet, but I know it's well liked!

    • It's a fun read! You can give it a try with my recommendation. The Aviator's wife is a book I've been looking forward to for quite some time. So yea!

      Have a good weekend!

  2. I find that I am always trying to do more than I actually can do. I will never be able to read all of my books in this lifetime but I will give it my best try. It can be fun to look at old reviews. I think that my review style has definitely changed over the years. I hope that you enjoy The Aviator's Wife. I look forward to your thoughts.

    • Hi there Carole! I do try to keep my TBR shelf under 500. It's still a lot, but somehow it feels manageable. Yes, I know I'm only kidding myself here, because it keeps on growing all the time!

I am looking forward to The Aviator's Wife. Will make sure to share my thoughts as well.

Thanks so much for stopping by, hope you will have a good weekend.

  3. Hey! Nice post and book choices! I love how quirky and fun Elza is! Definitely sets the blog apart. The books you mentioned sound interesting too.

I didn't *technically* participate in Throwback Thursday, but if you're interested here's an old post that just so happens to be my first book review. I actually got to email the authors and arrange an interview with them, so super excited about that! Below is the link.

    Happy Throwback Thursday!

    • Hi there JadeSky! Thank you so much for the lovely compliment! I love this blog and it's always good to hear that people enjoy it as well. I know a few cats who has also "left comments" – so we are well covered.

I just had a look at your very fist review and it is lovely! You did a great job!

Thanks so much for stopping by, hope you will have a good weekend.

    • I've read and loved The 100 year old man and then of course this one. Hitman Sanders and the meaning of everything, I struggled to get into. Maybe I'll try it at a later stage again.

  4. I look back on some of my first reviews and cringe at how long and rambling they got. I'm surprised anyone stuck around to comment at the end. LOL Neat that you're featuring them.

I hope you love the Aviator's Wife. That is a book I want to read at some point.

    • Hi Sophia, don't cringe! I think it's great fun to see how we develop over the years. Interestingly, some of my older reviews are still stronger than some of my newer ones in my own opinion. It's fun to take part in Throwback Thursday and Davida's version is especially awesome.

I look forward to The Aviator's Wife. Just imagine if I can get my whole TBR sorted so quickly….
