Top Ten Tuesday – The Cat and the Fox Terrier

Posted July 19, 2022 by elzaread in Top Ten Tuesday / 62 Comments

Greetings you guys. It’s time for Top Ten Tuesday and we couldn’t be more grateful to Jana @ That Artsy Reader Girl for making this week a freebie. I need a freebie to help me with me cattish plan to get rid of the latest infestation in our house.

On Sunday, I told you about the little mongrel my Mommy brought home on Friday. In case you’ve missed it:

I know, it’s still horrendous to look at. Not to mention the smell. But in any case, in order to beat your enemy, you have to know your enemy.  The best way I know how to gain information, is by reading.

I started searching for books with Wirehaired Fox Terriers. Apparently that is the breed the little mutt belongs to. And this is what I found:

Everyone blamed Emily Arundell’s accident on a rubber ball left on the stairs at her home in Market Basing by her frisky terrier, Bob. But the more she thought about her fall, the more convinced she became that one of her relatives was trying to kill her.

So, on April 17th she wrote about her anxieties and suspicions in a letter to Hercule Poirot. And included a request that he consult with her as soon as possible. Mysteriously he didn’t receive the letter until June 28th … by which time Emily was already dead.

Dumb – yes. That is a rather apt description. Although, it does bother me that Mr. Hercule Poirot was so taken with the little dog…

The remarkable story of a little dog who changed world history.

Berlin, 1938: Sirius, a dashing fox terrier, lives a charmed life with the German Jewish Liliencrons. But, with the rise of Nazism, the Liliencrons decide to leave Berlin for Hollywood.

Sirius takes his destiny into his own hands with the kind of melancholic mirth exclusive to his breed. He becomes a celebrated film star and circus performer, friend to Rita Hayworth and Cary Grant. But, when a magic trick goes wrong, Sirius ends up back in war-torn Berlin. Never one to despair, he finds himself in the Führer’s headquarters as Adolf Hitler’s lap dog… and an informant for the resistance.

Dictated to him by his dog Louis – Sirius’s grandson – Jonathan Crown has at last made this inspiring story available to the non-canine population.

My Mommy loved this book so much. The reason why they choose this breed, was because of Dumb Witness and Sirius.

In his debut adventure, Tintin is pursued by Bolshevik agents trying to prevent him from exposing the new Soviet regime. Punctuated by slapstick and political revelations, this story is based on the writings of an anticommunist Belgian ex-consul to the Ukraine. Herge’s early style revealed strong graphics, influenced by photo-reporting from the period, marking the historic debut of a major artist.

The Adventures of Tintin (FrenchLes Aventures de Tintin [lez‿avɑ̃tyʁ də tɛ̃tɛ̃]) is a series of 24 bande dessinée albums created by Belgian cartoonist Georges Remi, who wrote under the pen name Hergé. The series was one of the most popular European comics of the 20th century. By 2007, a century after Hergé’s birth in 1907,[1] Tintin had been published in more than 70 languages with sales of more than 200 million copies,[2] and had been adapted for radio, television, theatre and film.

Okay, maybe I am starting to have second thoughts here. If a wirehaired was good enough for Mr. Poirot and for Tin Tin ….

Defense lawyer Andy Carpenter spends as much time as he can working on his true passion, the Tara Foundation, the dog rescue organization he runs. Lately, Andy has been especially involved in a county prison program where inmates help train dogs the Tara Foundation has rescued to make them more adoptable, benefiting both the dogs and the prisoners. One of the prisoners Andy has been working with is Brian Atkins, who has 18 months left on a 5-year term for fraud. Brian has been helping to train Boomer, an adorable fox terrier the Tara Foundation rescued from a neglectful owner. Brian and Boomer are clearly a terrific match. In fact, Andy hopes that Brian will adopt Boomer himself, once his sentence is up. But one day, Andy arrives at the prison to discover that Brian has used Boomer to make an ingenious escape, and man and dog are both in the wind. The next day, the man on whose testimony Brian was convicted is found murdered. Brian is caught and arrested for the crime, though he forcefully protests his innocence. Suddenly, Andy finds himself with a new client in Brian and a new dog in Boomer. And as he starts to dig deeper into the murder and the events leading up to it, Andy realizes he might be putting them all in far more danger than anyone had realized.

Apparently they are quite clever….

Richard Adams, the author of Watership Down, creates a lyrical and engrossing tale, a remarkable journey into the hearts and minds of two canine heroes, Snitter and Rowf.

After being horribly mistreated at a government animal research facility, Snitter and Rowf escape into the isolation, and terror, of the wilderness. Aided only by a fox they call ”the Tod,” the two dogs must struggle to survive in their new environment. When the starving dogs attack some sheep, they are labeled ferocious man-eating monsters, setting off a great dog hunt that is later intensified by the fear that the dogs could be carriers of the bubonic plague.

Hmmmm… I know how horrible life in a shelter can be and I don’t think research facilities are any better. This little mutt lying on my Mommy’s feet only knows love and care so far in her 8 weeks here on God’s Earth.  As a queen, I guess it’s my duty to the Animal Kingdom to grant her a fun-filled and safe life. But she’s gonna have to work for it.

I couldn’t find any more books with Wirehaired Fox Terriers. I could find a few with a mutt or two who may or may not have some fox terrier blood.

In order to beat your enemy, you have to know your enemy. The best way I know how to gain information, is by reading. So I went searching for books with #wirehairedfoxterriers for this week's Top Ten Tuesday. Did I miss any? Click To Tweet

I believe I have enough research now. I will go and to a thorough investigation and report back to you guys as soon as it’s feliny possible. But just for the record, do you know of any other books with Wirehaired Fox Terriers? Or even better, how about some first hand experience?

Have a wonderful Tuesday!

  1. Awww, I love this post! Your doggo is so cute, and I’m sure the kitty will warm up to the fluffer before too long. Probably. I mean, my cats eventually decided to tolerate the dogs, mostly because they’re just big lugs who don’t even realize the cats exist. xD

    • Hi Sammie! Thank you so much! Glad you enjoyed our post. The puppy is a terrier, so she just wants to bite and chase everything!! She will have to learn that kitties are not part of that equation.

Elza is more inquisitive than scared and she will “teach” Anna the ropes quickly!

  2. What an awesome theme! I loved your picks, esp. Snowy! But the cover for Harry the Dirty Dog made me smile and sigh. I hope the kittens and the new dog in town will get along just fine. 🙂

  3. Oh he’s sooo cute and I love your choice for this week! Dumb Witness is one of my favorite Agatha Christies. No advice other than patience and consistency. If you don’t have a good place to take obedience classes near you there are tons of great videos on YouTube. Working with your dog really helps create that bond (though I’m sure Elza will be jealous!) . Good luck!

    • Hi Katherine!

So sorry I reply so late to this comment. Obedience school is definitely in the cards for this little one. She is as busy as anything and if she gets excited, there’s no stopping her! But she is a joy and I love her so much already.

Thanks for the advice Katherine, will definitely follow it.

  4. We are about to have a similar creature join our house! Supposedly it will be my son’s but apparently I am more excited that he is!!

Just seeing the cover for Harry the Dirty Dog bought back great memories!

  5. Poor kitty…..are you feeling usurped? I’m sure mommy has enough love to go around! Great collection of stories to help ‘breed’ understanding. Rosenfelt writes great doggy stories – I’ve read many. Also, though it’s not about terriers, a good one is A Big Little Life by Dean Koontz about his beloved dog Trixie. Hope home life settles down! 🙂 Thanks for the visit

  6. I didn’t know My Dog Skip was about a Fox-Wired Terrier. I thought it was a Jack Russell Terrier, but that might just be the movie. Anyway, I hope you vanquish your enemy soon, Elza … or at least learn to “keep your friends close and your enemies closer.” Maybe, being friends wouldn’t be so bad. 😉

    • Hi there Bree!

Elza has reached the point curiosity more than being aggressive or anything. The eldest cat is being a B!t*h with the pup, but puppies have a way to grow up and I hope she will remember that.

We also like our books and a few we haven’t read yet.
