Wednesday Wisdom from The Art of Racing in the Rain

It’s cold and raining here in our little corner of the world. What better bookish quotes to share today than from The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein. I am a very fortunate little kitten, I get to share a house with my very own Enzo. His name is Hercules and he and Enzo would have been great friends. So for today’s post, all pictures will be of him. Of course there are a few of us together, but not today. Today is about him.

I know my mommy loved this book very much. I’ve only seen the movie with them and I do understand why it had such an impact on her. Poor Enzo. He so desperately wanted to come “back” as a human.  Maybe I will also like to come back as a little girl. Then again, maybe not. Life’s pretty good as a fluffy white kitten.
Hercules is such a good dog. He’s Daddy’s best friend and he’s Mommy’s “first born”. He’s getting older now, he turned 11 end of May. But we love him so.

If you taught me to read and provide for me the same computer system as someone has provided for Stephen Hawking, I, too, would write great books. And yet you don’t teach me to read and you don’t give me a computer stick I can push around with my nose to point at the next letter I wish typed. So whose fault is it that I am what I am?”
Memory is time folding back on itself.

Pretend you are a dog like me and listen to other people rather than steal their stories.

People are always worried about what’s happening next. They often find it difficult to stand still, to occupy the now without worrying about the future. People are not generally satisfied with what they have, but they are very concerned with what they are “going” to have.

That which we manifest is before us; we are the creators of our own destiny. Be it through intention or ignorance, our successes and our failures have been brought on by none other than ourselves.

You should shine with all of your light, all of the time.

To live every day as if it had been been stolen from death, that is how I would like to live. To feel the joy of life, as Eve felt the joy of life. To separate oneself from the burden, the angst, the anguish that we all encounter every day. To say I am alive, I am wonderful. I am. I am. That is something to aspire to.

The true hero is flawed. The true test of a champion is not whether he can triumph, but whether he can overcome obstacles – preferably of his own making – in order to triumph.

Such wisdom. And that from a dog. Good grief. What is this world coming to? Just joking. I love to snuggle with Hercules and let his wisdom and overall goodness, comfort me.
Have you read Enzo’s story? Did I perhaps miss any quotes that you would like to share?
If you haven’t read the book and just know you would rather prefer the movie, do yourself a favor, and watch it. This is one of the best adaptations. Yes, we cried. But we also felt really good afterwards.
Lots of Love,
Elza

  1. Hi Suzanne! Thanks so much, yes! It is a real tearjerker, but it doesn't leave you feeling devastated. That type of crying I can do!
