Wednesday Wisdom from Miss Benson’s Beetle

Greetings! We haven’t done a Wednesday Wisdom post in weeks. Terrible, I know. We all need some Wisdom and it truly is just wrong to keep it for yourself. Luckily the book we share with you today, is filled with the most marvelous words of wisdom. She says it will most probably be her book of the year. It’s about a beetle. Don’t we just chase those little buggers around and squash them if they get under your feet? Apparently not. Miss Benson’s Beetle is very special and you will be ever so fortunate to meet one of of them.

It is 1950. In a devastating moment of clarity, Margery Benson abandons her dead-end job and advertises for an assistant to accompany her on an expedition. She is going to travel to the other side of the world to search for a beetle that may or may not exist.

Enid Pretty, in her unlikely pink travel suit, is not the companion Margery had in mind. And yet together they will be drawn into an adventure that will exceed every expectation. They will risk everything, break all the rules, and at the top of a red mountain, discover their best selves.

This is a story that is less about what can be found than the belief it might be found; it is an intoxicating adventure story but it is also about what it means to be a woman and a tender exploration of a friendship that defies all boundaries.

My Mommy loved this book and says we needed this book in 2020. She didn’t write a review, she just didn’t know where to begin or what to say that will do this marvelous book any justice. You are welcome to read The Reading Ladies’ Review. Carol did a wonderful job and it’s worth the read. My Mommy did however, safe quite a number of beautiful quotes from this book and that makes it perfect for Wednesday Wisdom. Here’s a few of her favorites:

Until that moment she’d assumed everything in the world was already found. It had never occurred to her things might happen in reverse. That you could see a picture of something in a book – that you could as good as imagine it – and then go off and look.

It is easier for human beings to believe the worst things said about them than the kindest.

Why did people lift their eyes to the sky in search of the holy? True evidence of the divine was at their feet.

It was a lesson: a lesson that the weather was bigger than her and must be treated with caution. Unlike Margery, it could change in a moment.
It was by placing herself side by side with Enid that Margery had finally begun to see the true outline of herself.

After all, what did it mean? Home? Suppose it was not the place you came from, but a thing you carried with you, like a suitcase.

Margery’s adventure was not about making her mark on the world: it was about letting the world make a mark on her.
I guess I would love to meet those little buggers. What do you think? Have you read Miss Benson’s Beetle?
Lots of Love,

Elza

    • Hi Lindsey! It really is worth the read. It is definitely under my Top Ten Reads for 2020. Perhaps even number 1. Let's see what December holds on the reading front.

  1. Aaah thank you so much! This book is definitely worth the read. I love the Wednesday Wisdom feature, I might consider turning it into a link up somewhere in the new year.
