Yesterday’s Top Ten Ten Tuesday was all about books that make you smile. 10 Books that make me smile.
While drafting my post, I came across my Right ho, Jeeves by P.G. Wodehouse and realized that Bertie Wooster and his ever so clever valet, Jeeves, are exactly what we currently need for our rather sour dispositions.
These masks that we are wearing day in and day out, are hindering our smiles to come through. I would given my left arm (yes, I do have the right expression here. I’m just left handed) to see all the clever coping ideas Jeeves would have came up with during our current situation. Not to mention everything that Bertie would have stuffed up and exactly where he would have forgotten his mask, or even worse, his pants.
“There are moments, Jeeves, when one asks oneself: Do trousers matter?”
(For once, my dear Bertie, I don’t think Jeeves’ reply of “the mood will pass” would have been the correct answer.)
We Woosters do not lightly forget. At least we do – some things – appointments and people’s birthdays, and letters to post and all that. But not an absolute bally insult like the above.
Freddie experienced the sort of abysmal soul sadness which afflicts one of Tolstoy’s Russian peasants when, after putting in a heavy day’s work strangling his father, beating his wife and dropping the baby into the city’s reservoir, he turns to the cupboards, only to find the vodka bottle empty.
Lady Glossip: Mr Wooster, how would you support a wife?
Bertie Wooster: Well, I suppose it depends on who’s wife it was, a little gentle pressure beneath the elbow while crossing a busy street usually fits the bill.
The glimpses I had caught of his face from the corner of the eyes had told me that he was grim and resolute his supply of the milk of human kindness plainly short by several gallons.
The fascination of shooting as a sport depends almost wholly on whether you are at the right or wrong end of the gun.

If you haven’t read the Jeeves and Wooster books by P.G. Wodehouse, do your smile a favor and get your hands (after you’ve washed them of course) on them. Or just watch the TV series! Right ho – it is Stephen Fry. Or the best option, listen to the audio recordings. Right ho – it is Stephen Fry’s voice.
I hope you have a smile on your face now. Even if it is behind a mask.

I love this series! Though I did read one that didn't have Wooster (Jeeves was working for someone else while Bertie was on vacation or something) and it wasn't nearly as good. Great quotes!
Hi Katherine! I haven't read the whole series, my aunt loved them and I know she did. I love P.G. Wodehouse overall. He had such a good sense of humor. I've read a couple of his other books as well, Three men and a maid was hilarious and Uneasy Money!
