Weekend Book Friends #17

Posted April 23, 2021 by elzaread in Readathon, Weekend Book Friends / 34 Comments

Greetings Humans! We haven’t done a Weekend Book Friends in ages. Missed us much? My Mommy is having a long weekend and we plan on spending it reading. The.Whole.Time. Tomorrow is the Dewey 24 Hour Readathon and we are very excited to take part in it. If you also want to take part, the link is attached to the image below.

We are not quite sure what exactly we are going to read yet and I suspect we might just have some fun with the Bingo Board and the Instagram Prompts. It’s suppose to be fun! But before we can start with our Readathon, we first need to finish our current read. I guess we can perhaps let it stand over for tomorrow as we still have around a 100 pages left.

In an isolated college town in the hills of Southern California, a freshman girl stumbles into her dorm room, falls asleep—and doesn’t wake up. She sleeps through the morning, into the evening. Her roommate, Mei, cannot rouse her. Neither can the paramedics who carry her away, nor the perplexed doctors at the hospital. Then a second girl falls asleep, and then another, and panic takes hold of the college and spreads to the town. As the number of cases multiplies, classes are canceled, and stores begin to run out of supplies. A quarantine is established. The National Guard is summoned.

Mei, an outsider in the cliquish hierarchy of dorm life, finds herself thrust together with an eccentric, idealistic classmate. Two visiting professors try to protect their newborn baby as the once-quiet streets descend into chaos. A father succumbs to the illness, leaving his daughters to fend for themselves. And at the hospital, a new life grows within a college girl, unbeknownst to her—even as she sleeps. A psychiatrist, summoned from Los Angeles, attempts to make sense of the illness as it spreads through the town. Those infected are displaying unusual levels of brain activity, more than has ever been recorded. They are dreaming heightened dreams—but of what?

Let’s pay a visit to a couple of our beloved Weekend Book Friends and share our books. We’ve missed you guys!

Book Beginnings

For our first stop today, we will pay a visit to Gilion over at Rose City Reader to share our Book Beginnings.  Every Friday you can link up and share the first sentence of your current read (or the one you plan to devour over the weekend), as well as your initial thoughts and impressions. Hashtags are the one thing I do know on social media, so simply #bookbeginnings so we can find each other.

The Dreamers open with the following line:
“At first, they blame the air.
It’s an old idea, a poison in the ether, a danger carried in by the wind.
Whatever this is, it comes over them quietly: a sudden drowsiness, a closing of the eyes.”

My Mommy really enjoys this book and she says she loves the poetic, dreamlike writing style. I mainly just nap next to her and hope to wake up again.

The Friday 56

Next we will pay a visit to Freda over at Freda’s voice who hosts the Friday 56. Don’t show up empty handed though!

  • Grab a book (Yes, any book. But it might get you to your other Friday activities a bit quicker if you just grab the book you are currently reading)
  • Turn to page 56 or 56% on your e-reader
  • Find a sentence or two (your other Friday activities might determine this)
  • Post it!
  • Remember to post your link on Freda’s Voice and to visit the other guys in the linky.
  • And  last but not least, don’t forget to list the title of the book and the author as well.
We are way passed page 56 already, but this passage on page 56 sets the tone of this book so perfectly:
“The other kids lie around all day in the halls, waiting for something to happen, to change, or at least for the next meal to come. After only a few days, they have turned sleepy and sluggish, but who can say what is causing it: the sickness or the stillness?”

Book Blogger Hop

The Book Blogger’s hop’s purpose is to give bloggers a chance to follow other blogs, learn about new books, befriend other bloggers, and receive new followers to your own blog. Every week, there will be a prompt featuring a book related question. It’s hosted by Ramblings of a coffee addicted writer and I guess he hops around like a bunny due to all the caffeine. Hence his name. They also have a lovely new logo!

Today’s question: Do you do most of your blog work on a computer, iPad or phone?

We actually do most of our blog work in our heads. That’s why so very few posts see the light of publishing. My Mommy always have all these great ideas, but before you know it, the week is gone. But the ones that do manage to land on this blog, are mainly done on a laptop. We use the tablet every now and then and Mommy will use the phone for comments and some blog hopping.

Friday Face-Off

We love Friday Face Off and my Mommy so enjoys searching for lovely covers. The rules are fairly simple each week, following a predetermined theme choose a book (this doesn’t have to be a book that you’ve read), compare a couple of the different covers available for that particular book and choose your favourite.

This week’s prompt:

Your Current Read

This was easy! The only problem is that my Mommy takes at least an hour playing around on Canva. She seriously needs a few templates.

We didn’t realize there are so many different covers for The Dreamers. And so diverse! The Swedish one (top left corner) is really nice and captures the feel of the book well, so does the German one. But I think we like the one that we are reading at the moment most.

Which one is your favorite? And what is your current read?
Hope you will all have a wonderful weekend and that you have a nice book and a lovely cat to curl up with. If you are taking part in the Dewey Readathon, let us know!
Lots of Love,

  1. The Dreamers sound amazing, I'm definitely adding it to my (ever-growing) list! I love the premise but it also feels rather timely! Thanks for dropping by my post and I hope you had a lovely weekend 🙂

    • Hi there Juli! Yes, The Dreamers are very timely and there are a couple of very apt quotes from the book that I will share on my next Wednesday Wisdom. Probably in a week or so!

  2. I do most blog stuff on my laptop too. I use my phone and iPad all the time but hate doing blog stuff on either. Love all your covers this week! I ended up picking up a reread this weekend because I wasn't feeling well and only a reread would do!

    • I have once did a whole post on the tablet, but it took me ages. I don't see much difference between a phone and a tablet, but if I do need to grab one of them, it will definitely rather be the phone.

I hope you are feeling better and that the Nora Roberts did the trick!

  3. I sort of like the Drommarna cover. Looks a bit creepy — like something is amiss … as the story is. Just don't go to sleep!!

  4. Canva is so addicting and you're right, you can go down a rabbit hole and spend an hour just trying out different colors, patterns, and styles. I also hope to do a bunch of reading on Saturday.

    • Hi Helen! I actually still struggle with Canva sometimes and then I just get frustrated. But yes!! It's a magical platform. I also enjoy collage maker on my phone, that is very user friendly and if I don't have time, I just do my graphics on there and send it through to my laptop.

The 24 hour readathon was a lot of fun! I'll do it again for sure!

  5. Hey! *pops back in after way too long* Great post. "The Dreamers" sounds really interesting…I've never heard of a story with that plot before! And the 24 hour reading challenge sounds like a great event too. Hope you have fun!

    • Hi!! Yes, yes – sorry for the long absence. I will try my best to be a bit more on the virtual playground. The plot for Dreamers have a a couple of overlapping elements with Stephen King's Sleeping Beauties. But I won't necessarily place the two books in the same category. Both are excellent in their own way though.

    • Hi Freda! If I were Karen Thompson Walker, I'd be a bit freaked out. But I think its worth the read for just about all of humanity out there. It's not so much about the disease, but about the impact and the aftermath.

  6. I have a lot of creative posts in my head too but they never seem to make it to a posting point. I think laptops are the way to go ❤️

    • The powers that be should create an app where you can just say your thoughts out loud and your phone records it. Or something to that effect. But then again, it can be a bit dangerous sometimes. Scrap that idea. We should just learn to take better notes!

  7. I am ready for the readathon tomorrow, too. Of course it may be tomorrow where you live…or is it yesterday? In any case, hope to see you soon.

(Love the graphic you made on Canva. Exquisite.)

    • Hi Debs! The Readathon will start at 14:00 my time. I am going to try to stick to it as much as possible, but might steal an hour or so just so that I don't miss out all that much.
      Will check in with you!

  8. I love the cover of The Dreamers.

I hadn't thought about the amount of mental blogging we do – all the thinking about posts etc. My best ideas are usually to be had in the middle of the night, sadly to be forgotten about the next day. I really must put a pen and paper next to my bed to record all those genius moments!

    • I normally have my best ideas in the bath or on my way to work. I have a big diary this year to help me write all the ideas down, but it still doesn't always materialize as I dreamt it would.

  9. The Dreamers sounds so good! I'm so curious about what's causing the sickness. Thanks for sharing! Hope you have a great weekend! 🙂

  10. I'm seeing a lot of Dreamers here. I think you'd highlighted it last week, it looked awesome. Sleeping sickness, quarantine, and what-not! I look forward to a review soon 🙂

    • Hi Lex! Yes, I did talk about it on Sunday as well. It's really good! Will find it today as part of the 24hour readathon. And then talk about it some more!
