Weekend Book Friends #2

Posted July 10, 2020 by elzaread in Weekend Book Friends / 17 Comments

Greetings Humans! Hooray, hooray! It’s Friday! And Mommy and Daddy are on their way home! Yea!! I am doing a very happy dance here, just to make sure it is out of my system before they arrive back home. As you know, I need to be aloof and nonchalant when they walk through the door.

They’ve been away for two weeks and I am not all that sure what Mommy read during the time away. My guess is not much, because what fun is there in reading a book if you don’t have a cute, fluffy white kitten curled up beside you? But on Saturday night and Sunday morning, that’s exactly what we’ll do! Let’s share our weekend reading predictions with a few friends:

For our first stop, we will pay a visit to Gilion over at Rose City Reader to share our Book Beginnings.  Every Friday you can link up and share the first sentence of your current read (or the one you plan to devour over the weekend), as well as your initial thoughts and impressions. Hashtags are the one thing I do know on social media, so simply #bookbeginnings so we can find each other.

For today’s feature, I am going to share only one book. I’m not actually sure what books Mommy took with her, but I do remember this one lying on the little table where she always keeps the books she means to read next.

Bear Town by Fredrik Backman  People say Beartown is finished. A tiny community nestled deep in the forest, it is slowly losing ground to the ever encroaching trees. But down by the lake stands an old ice rink, built generations ago by the working men who founded this town. And in that ice rink is the reason people in Beartown believe tomorrow will be better than today. Their junior ice hockey team is about to compete in the national semi-finals, and they actually have a shot at winning. All the hopes and dreams of this place now rest on the shoulders of a handful of teenage boys.

Being responsible for the hopes of an entire town is a heavy burden, and the semi-final match is the catalyst for a violent act that will leave a young girl traumatized and a town in turmoil. Accusations are made and, like ripples on a pond, they travel through all of Beartown, leaving no resident unaffected.

Beartown explores the hopes that bring a small community together, the secrets that tear it apart, and the courage it takes for an individual to go against the grain. In this story of a small forest town, Fredrik Backman has found the entire world.”

How’s this for a strong beginning:
“Late one evening towards the end of March, a teenager picked up a double-barrelled shotgun, walked into the forest, put the gun to some-one else’s forehead, and pulled the trigger.

This is the story of how we got there”

That’s the only lines printed on the page. Golly, turn the page and get reading!

Our next stop is Freda over at Freda’s voice who hosts the Friday 56. Don’t show up empty handed though!

  • Grab a book (Yes, any book. But it might get you to your other Friday activities a bit quicker if you just grab the book you are currently reading)
  • Turn to page 56 or 56% on your e-reader
  • Find a sentence or two (your other Friday activities might determine this)
  • Post it!
  • Remember to post your link on Freda’s Voice and to visit the other guys in the linky.
  • And  last but not least, don’t forget to list the title of the book and the author as well.
Lets’ see what happens on page 56:
“Hockey is a simple sport: when your desire to win is stronger than your fear of losing, you have a chance. No one wins when they’re frightened.

He hopes the juniors are too young to feel fear tomorrow, too naive to understand how much is at stake. Because a hockey crowd knows no nuances only heaven or hell.”

I have no idea what hockey is…. But it seems rather serious. Maybe I’ll just stay out of it.
Without Mommy even knowing, I’ve decided to link up with one more Friday Feature today. As you know, I am only 9 months old and not able to read yet. Not that I think I ever will, Mommy can read for me while I nap. But I love pretty covers.
I saw the Friday Face-off and couldn’t understand what they meant at first, until I saw it’s a weekly feature where you can show off some of your favorite book covers (nothing to do with scratching someones face apparently) The rules are fairly simple each week, following a predetermined theme, choose a book (this doesn’t have to be a book that you’ve read), compare a couple of the different covers available for that particular book and choose your favorite.

I’m not quite sure where to find a link-up or exactly who the host is, but I do think it is Lynn over at Lynn’s Books. Please correct me if  I’m wrong, or take it up with Mommy. Today’s theme is:

At the end of every light, is a tunnel of darkness. (A cover featuring a tunnel)

Mommy’s not here to help me with covers, so I had to do that Google thing. I am aware that I’m not very original here. But behold!  I’ve stumbled upon the following book and I do hope that my Mommy will read it to us soon!

                                                                  Tunnels by Roderick Gordon

Which one I like most? The one without the dog.

I might still have to work on the latest edition of our Friday post, but never fear when Mommy’s near. And she will be back tomorrow!

What are you reading this weekend? Have you read any of our picks? Anyone out there also doing the Friday Face-off post and willing to help here? We’ll appreciate it tremendously!
Have a wonderful weekend!
Lots of love,
Elza

  1. Great choice for the FFO – I also like the cover without the dog but then I like the other two covers that are very similar too.
    Lynn 😀

    • I hear you Debs… I was very excited to start with school on Monday and then we got sent home this morning again. Will hopefully be back on Monday. So now everything is back online and that is soooo time conuming!

Hope your week is better. Thanks for stopping by!

  2. Cats must always be aloof. 🙂 Hope your humans had a great trip and arrive home safely. And I love the tunnels covers. Those are always fun.

Hope your week ahead is a good one! 🙂

    • Hi Greg! Yes, we are home safely!

So far my week is hectic. But let's see if Thursday and the weekend might be a tad more relaxed.

  3. That is quite the opener. I really enjoyed the writing of A Man Called Ove though I had issues with the plot so I'm intrigued by this one. Hope you've gotten lots of weekend reading done!

    • HI Katherine! I actually didn't no….! Been a bit hectic here. We just went back to school on Monday and got closed again this morning due to Covid. If I can just get everything done today, I might have time to read a bit later on.

      Thanks for stopping by!

  4. I'm sure you'll be thrilled to get Mommy back home, Elza. In the meantime, my favourite FF cover is the top r-hand edition. So cool and eye-catching… And a brilliant choice:)). I hope you have a good week!

    • Hi Sarah! Thank you so much. I am looking forward to playing around a bit more with the Friday Face-off! Thanks for your great example and for visiting us.

    • I've started with A man called Ove a couple of years ago, but I borrowed it from someone and had to give it back before I could finish it. So this will be my first one!
