Weekend Book Friends #20

Posted July 23, 2021 by elzaread in Weekend Book Friends / 32 Comments

Greetings Humans! It’s Friday and my Mommy is at home! Yea for me! It’s been terribly cold here across the country with snowfall in a number of places. Yes, we know that snow is nothing new to many of you, but for us, it sure is wow!

Perfect weather to stay inside and just read a book. Besides the rather unpleasant weather, it’s not been the best of weeks at school either with parent meetings every day until late and load shedding and all other sorts of fun. I think my Mommy needs to read the following book this weekend:

Between life and death there is a library, and within that library, the shelves go on forever. Every book provides a chance to try another life you could have lived. To see how things would be if you had made other choices . . . Would you have done anything different, if you had the chance to undo your regrets?

A dazzling novel about all the choices that go into a life well lived, from the internationally bestselling author of Reasons to Stay Alive and How To Stop Time.

Somewhere out beyond the edge of the universe there is a library that contains an infinite number of books, each one the story of another reality. One tells the story of your life as it is, along with another book for the other life you could have lived if you had made a different choice at any point in your life. While we all wonder how our lives might have been, what if you had the chance to go to the library and see for yourself? Would any of these other lives truly be better?

In The Midnight Library, Matt Haig’s enchanting new novel, Nora Seed finds herself faced with this decision. Faced with the possibility of changing her life for a new one, following a different career, undoing old breakups, realizing her dreams of becoming a glaciologist; she must search within herself as she travels through the Midnight Library to decide what is truly fulfilling in life, and what makes it worth living in the first place.

Let’s pay a visit to a couple of our beloved Weekend Book Friends and share our weekend reads. We will also pay a visit to our new friends for Friendly Fill-Ins. We love making new friends!

Book Beginnings

For our first stop today, we will pay a visit to Gilion over at Rose City Reader to share our Book Beginnings.  Every Friday you can link up and share the first sentence of your current read (or the one you plan to devour over the weekend), as well as your initial thoughts and impressions. Hashtags are the one thing I do know on social media, so simply #bookbeginnings so we can find each other.

We are literally cracking the spine of this one as we type here, so we know as  much as you do:
Nineteen years before she decided to die, Nora Seed sat in the warmth of the small library at Hazeldene School in the town of Bedford. She sat at a low table staring at a chess board.
This was my Mommy Christmas present to herself last year. Perfect weather to have Christmas in July.

The Friday 56

Next we will pay a visit to Freda over at Freda’s voice who hosts the Friday 56. Don’t show up empty handed though!

  • Grab a book (Yes, any book. But it might get you to your other Friday activities a bit quicker if you just grab the book you are currently reading)
  • Turn to page 56 or 56% on your e-reader
  • Find a sentence or two (your other Friday activities might determine this)
  • Post it!
  • Remember to post your link on Freda’s Voice and to visit the other guys in the linky.
  • And  last but not least, don’t forget to list the title of the book and the author as well.
We’ll just pick a random paragraph on page 56 and tell you more about it later:
This was the life she had been in mourning for. This was the life she had beaten herself up for not living. This was the timeline she thought she had regretted not existing in.

This can only be an interesting read.

Book Blogger Hop

The Book Blogger’s hop’s purpose is to give bloggers a chance to follow other blogs, learn about new books, befriend other bloggers, and receive new followers to your own blog. Every week, there will be a prompt featuring a book related question. It’s hosted by Ramblings of a coffee addicted writer and I guess he hops around like a bunny due to all the caffeine. Hence his name.

Today’s question: Have you ever done a Classics Club challenge? If not, would you want to?

Oh we love The Classics Club! We’ve signed up for our own Classics Challenge last year and it really is the greatest fun to be part of the Classics Community. You should really sign up. If you click on the image below, it will link you up to all our fun Classics Club posts. So far.

Friendly Fill-Ins

We are having so much fun with the Friendly Fill-Ins. It’s a lovely way to link up with fellow blogger and a few feline friends. Friendly Fill-Ins is hosted by 15 and Meowing and Four-Legged Furballs. They come up with a couple of sentences, and then you have to fill in the blanks. This week’s questions:

1. I will never stop __________________.
2. It was a relief to ___________________.
3. _________ made me feel proud of myself.
4. _________ grosses me out.

I think my Mommy can have the honors of answering the questions today.

1. I will never stop believing people are inherently good.
2. It was a relief to not have any more riots and looting in our country this week.
3. Keeping a smile on my face while I actually want to rip some ones head off made me feel proud of myself.
4. The Walking Dead grosses me out.
What is your plans for the weekend?  And what is your current read?
Hope you will all have a wonderful weekend and that you have a nice book and a lovely cat to curl up with.
Lots of Love,

  1. The 'Shit it's cold' photo really made me laugh xD 'The Midnight Library' is absolutely a book I want to read as well but I think I might wait for cold and snow as well, that seems more apt than heat and sweat! I'm absolutely going to check out your Classics Club tag, see ya there!

    • Hi there Juli! I bought The Midnight Library for myself for Christmas last year and here in SA, it's as hot as hell over Christmas time. I just didn't have time to get to it during the December holidays. But maybe it is a bit better to read it in the cold….

Hope you will enjoy the Classics Club!

  2. I've been caught up with daily / work stuff and seem to have missed out on a lot of posts! The snow scenery looks right cozy, and I'm glad it cheered you up!

    • Hi there Lex! I've been missing you! Don't stress, life does tend to get in the way of blogging and reading and reviewing. So terribly unfair. The snow was pretty, but the sun is shining again and that will always be me preferred scenery!

  3. I'm with you on your shock on snow. I'm not a fan of that stuff at all and very glad we don't get it very often and when we do it is very short lived. The Midnight Library is on my TBR. It looks so good!

    • Hi Katherine! We love watching the snow from a distance, but nope – no dire need to go and build a snowman! I will keep you updated with The Midnight Library, but I think you will enjoy it yes.

    • What a lovely term – Life-affirming. I love that Debbie and it sure is the feeling that I also get from The Midnight Library. I should spend more time on The Classics Club. Will have to start catching up for sure.

    • So far we are enjoying The Midnight Library. My Classics Club challenge can definitely look a bit better…! But I will catch up eventually!

  4. I bought The Midnight Library a few weeks back and I can't wait to read it. I just need to get through a few ebooks first before I let myself. I've been thinking about joining in on the Classics Club so maybe I will in a few months.

    • I am enjoying The Midnight Library so far and I hope it will live up to its hype. I'm not participating in the Classic Club as well as I should, but I still love it and will catch up again soon!

  5. The Midnight Library looks like a great book. Thank you for participating in the fill-ins, great answers. I am glad the riots have stopped. XO

    • I am enjoying it so far and I hope it will live up to its hype.

I love The Friendly Fill-Ins and try to take part as much as possible!

    • Hi Greg! The only way that I'll get things to slow down a bit, is if I let it slow down. Somedays I feel that it's time to start doing just that.

      The snow is amazing yes!

  6. We're having the exact opposite weather, but I'm staying inside too. It's hot and humid out there. That book looks really good. I hope you have a great weekend!

  7. I congratulate you on keeping your cool in the face of idiocy. That is a tough thing to do! And snow… how fun. We last had snow in 1962 (I was not alive for it, but I have seen a photo).

    • Hi there Helen! Yes, it's been one of those weeks where you just had to keep that smile plastered on your face.

I remember it snowed when I was a little girl and now it's the second year in a row that we have snow on the mountains and surrounding areas. Very cool! In more ways than one…..

    • I can imagine that the audio reading must have been good as well. I enjoy reading The Midnight Library so far. I see there are rather mixed reviews, so let's see how I'm going to end up feeling about it!

  8. It's hot here, but soon the season will change and the snow will come.

Love your fill ins and especially #2. I pray for you and your country.

Have a fabulous day and weekend. ♥

    • The colder weather should subside within a week or two, but we don't really see summer again until around mid December. That's the one thing I don't like about our little coastal town.

Thanks so much for stopping by!

  9. What an intriguing premise! I'm definitely curious for more. I don't know how I missed this book, but I'll have to check it out. Thanks for sharing! Hope you have a great weekend! 🙂
