Weekend Book Friends #4

Posted July 24, 2020 by elzaread in Weekend Book Friends / 15 Comments

It’s Friday and the most beautiful day out there. It’s also the first day my mommy has opened the blog and doing anything one here. It’s been a busy week, but a good one. We’re just about done with Bear Town by Fredrik Backman and we need to find something else to read this weekend.
Mommy got a bit distracted from her Alphabet challenge (Halfway through a reading challenge) the last couple of weeks, she needs to get back on track! She needs to read a book starting with the letter “F” and she just can’t decide which one to read. That’s what Weekend Book Friends are for! YOU can help us decide which one to read! Our options are:

When Atlanta housewife Abigail Campano comes home unexpectedly one afternoon, she walks into a nightmare. A broken window, a bloody footprint on the stairs and, most devastating of all, the horrifying sight of her teenage daughter lying dead on the landing, a man standing over her with a bloody knife. The struggle which follows changes Abigail’s life forever.

When the local police make a misjudgment which not only threatens the investigation but places a young girl’s life in danger, the case is handed over to Special Agent Will Trent of the Criminal Apprehension Team – paired with detective Faith Mitchell, a woman who resents him from their first meeting.

But in the relentless heat of a Georgia summer, Will and Faith realise that they must work together to find the brutal killer who has targeted one of Atlanta’s wealthiest, most privileged communities – before it’s too late… Goodreads

Growing up on Long Island, Shelby Richmond is an ordinary girl until one night an extraordinary tragedy changes her fate. Her best friend’s future is destroyed in an accident, while Shelby walks away with the burden of guilt.

What happens when a life is turned inside out? When love is something so distant it may as well be a star in the sky? Faithful is the story of a survivor, filled with emotion—from dark suffering to true happiness—a moving portrait of a young woman finding her way in the modern world. A fan of Chinese food, dogs, bookstores, and men she should stay away from, Shelby has to fight her way back to her own future. In New York City she finds a circle of lost and found souls—including an angel who’s been watching over her ever since that fateful icy night.

Here is a character you will fall in love with, so believable and real and endearing, that she captures both the ache of loneliness and the joy of finding yourself at last. For anyone who’s ever been a hurt teenager, for every mother of a daughter who has lost her way, Faithful is a roadmap. Goodreads

Tricky one, I know. That’s why we ask your opinion. Let’s share our opening sentences and page 56 with the regulars and see what the final poll will be!

Book Beginnings

For our first stop, we will pay a visit to Gilion over at Rose City Reader to share our Book Beginnings.  Every Friday you can link up and share the first sentence of your current read (or the one you plan to devour over the weekend), as well as your initial thoughts and impressions. Hashtags are the one thing I do know on social media, so simply #bookbeginnings so we can find each other.

Fractured opens with a prologue:
“Abigail Campano sat in her car parked on the street outside her own house. She was looking up at the mansion they had remodeled almost ten years ago. The house was huge – too much space for three people, especially since one of them, God willing would be going off to college in less than a year.”
(Knowing what we do know from the Goodreads Blurp, it was unfortunately not God’s will. And Abigail’s life will be fractured. Shame man.)
Faithful opens with:
“In February when the snow comes down hard, little globes of light are left along Route 110, on the side of the road that slopes off when a driver least expects it. The lights are candles set inside paper bags, surrounded by sand, and they burn past midnight.”
(Why do I get the impression that something sad happened here?)

The Friday 56

Next we will pay a visit to Freda over at Freda’s voice who hosts the Friday 56. Don’t show up empty handed though!

  • Grab a book (Yes, any book. But it might get you to your other Friday activities a bit quicker if you just grab the book you are currently reading)
  • Turn to page 56 or 56% on your e-reader
  • Find a sentence or two (your other Friday activities might determine this)
  • Post it!
  • Remember to post your link on Freda’s Voice and to visit the other guys in the linky.
  • And  last but not least, don’t forget to list the title of the book and the author as well.
Lets’ see what happens on page 56 of Fractured:
“Will was fed up with her attitude. ‘Detective Mitchell, I think your anger is commendable, but the fact that I banged up six of your guys for skimming off of drug dealers doesn’t mean a hell of a lot to the parents who lost their kids today or the ones who are waiting to find out whether or not their daughter is still alive, and since the Atlanta Police Department mishandled this case from the get-go, and since the only reason you are still involved in this case is because I need people to do my scut work, I expect you to follow directions no matter how mundane or ludicrous my requests seem to you.”
(That was all 1 sentence….)
Page 56 in Faithful contains the following passage:
“They can see Sue at the window. She’s lighting a candle, the way she did when Shelby was little, an old tradition said to bring wanderers home.”
Mommy really does look rather confused here. I believe you should help her to make a decision. And please don’t just pick Fractured because I am featured with that book and the cutest of the two kitties. My older brother is also a very handsome chap.

Friday Face-off

Our last stop for today, is Friday Face-off, a weekly feature where we share different book covers of the same title. The beautiful Lynn over at Lynn’s Books is our host and she will determine the themes for every week’s covers. You can choose your own book. Today’s theme is:
Framed – more meanings than one

Remember in the beginning of this post, I told you about Mommy only opening the blog now? So no… no time to check all the books on the bookshelf today. So we had a quick cup of tea with Google, our old and trusted friend. Google is soooo clever. I want to be that clever when I am all grown up Look at this lovely book Google came up with!

The Frame-up by Wendy McLeod MacKnight (don’t you just love her name)

I could only get three covers. The first one is the hardcover and there are a few of them in different shades of purple and blue. The paperback one is lovely and my favorite for sure! The Chinese one fits the story very well. Have you read this book? I’ve never read it or even heard of it. But it does sound good!
What do you think? Which cover would you prefer?
Let us know what you will be reading this weekend! And remember to help my mommy decide which book she should read next.
Have a wonderful weekend!
Lots of love,
Elza

  1. What a fantastic choice for the FFO – I rather like the Chinese cover this week. And not just the cover, the title also fits! Win/win.
    Lynn 😀

  2. HI Freda! I also love Karin Slaughter. I am playing around a bit today and will then decide what's next!

Thanks for stopping by, hope you will have a good weekend!

  3. I hope you have a good weekend!
I've never been tempted by the alphabet reading challenge but it's a popular one! Good luck with it.

    • Hi there Nicci! It's the easiest one to chose if you don't really know what to do…! So far so good. Will try something different next year though.

      Thanks for stopping by!

    • Hi Ann! I know, I'm just about done with Bear Town, so I think I need to just wait a bit before I read another gruesome book. But then again, I might change my mind by midday!

      Have a good weekend.
