Weekend Book Friends #5

Posted July 31, 2020 by elzaread in Weekend Book Friends / 23 Comments

It’s the weekend and although the sun is shining, it’s dreadfully cold. Perfect weather to move all the week’s work aside and pull the books and weekend shenanigans closer. Daddy’s been away the whole week, so we are eagerly awaiting his return. In the meantime, Mommy is busy wit a bit of Diamond Painting and finishing her audio book so that she can start with one of the books in her Audible folder she just can’t wait to start with. I’ts part of the Hello Sunshine Book Club and we love all those books! Or most of them. Excited for this one:

Erin is a documentary filmmaker on the brink of a professional breakthrough, Mark a handsome investment banker with big plans. Passionately in love, they embark on a dream honeymoon to the tropical island of Bora Bora, where they enjoy the sun, the sand, and each other. Then, while scuba diving in the crystal blue sea, they find something in the water. . . .
Could the life of your dreams be the stuff of nightmares?
Suddenly the newlyweds must make a dangerous choice: to speak out or to protect their secret. After all, if no one else knows, who would be hurt? Their decision will trigger a devastating chain of events. . . .
Have you ever wondered how long it takes to dig a grave?
Wonder no longer. Catherine Steadman’s enthralling voice shines throughout this spellbinding debut novel. With piercing insight and fascinating twists, Something in the Water challenges the reader to confront the hopes we desperately cling to, the ideals we’re tempted to abandon, and the perfect lies we tell ourselves.
 Goodreads

It’s the first time we will share an audio book with our Friday regulars, so please do excuse if the punctuation isn’t perfect, or if Mommy skipped a word or two. You know, humans can’t hear as well as cats and she does didn’t want me to do the audio-to-print translation.

Book Beginnings

For our first stop, we will pay a visit to Gilion over at Rose City Reader to share our Book Beginnings.  Every Friday you can link up and share the first sentence of your current read (or the one you plan to devour over the weekend), as well as your initial thoughts and impressions. Hashtags are the one thing I do know on social media, so simply #bookbeginnings so we can find each other.

Something in the water opens with:
“Have you ever wondered how long it takes to dig a grave? Wonder no longer. It takes an age. However long you think it takes, double that.”

The Friday 56

Next we will pay a visit to Freda over at Freda’s voice who hosts the Friday 56. Don’t show up empty handed though!

  • Grab a book (Yes, any book. But it might get you to your other Friday activities a bit quicker if you just grab the book you are currently reading)
  • Turn to page 56 or 56% on your e-reader
  • Find a sentence or two (your other Friday activities might determine this)
  • Post it!
  • Remember to post your link on Freda’s Voice and to visit the other guys in the linky.
  • And  last but not least, don’t forget to list the title of the book and the author as well.
Lets’ see what happens on about 56% of Something in the water:
“I glance at Mark who’s trawling through old business cards. Hundreds, thousands of them. Twelve years worth of meetings, dinners, functions, networking drinks. Each card a person. A person who could potentially be of help to us now.”

(What on earth did these guys do??)
I’ve decided to join up with another weekly feature that I haven’t visited since my Mommy started blogging again. I think she was a bit scared that I might try to catch the bunny. Most bunnies are bigger than me (I kid you not), so I’ll rather stay clear.

Book Blogger Hop

The Book Blogger’s hop’s purpose is to give bloggers a chance to follow other blogs, learn about new books, befriend other bloggers, and receive new followers to your own blog. Every week, there will be a prompt featuring a book related question. It’s hosted by Ramblings of a coffee addicted writer and he guess he hops around like a bunny due to all the caffeine. Hence his name.

This week’s question: If you haven’t read a book in a while and someone asks about a character or the plot, can you recall the details?

Well, that depends. If you ask mommy to describe Jamie Fraser in detail, I think she might pull it off perfectly. No, she can’t remember all the Mary Higgins Clark books she’s read in detail. Hardly the titles. But she does remember most of the Agatha Christie’s, plot and characters included. Some books are like a well prepared home-cooked meal. The substance will last a long time. Other ones are like McDonalds. It fills you up and you enjoy it, but by tomorrow it’s long gone.

Friday Face-off

Our last stop for today, is Friday Face-off, a weekly feature where we share different book covers of the same title. The beautiful Lynn over at Lynn’s Books is our host and she will determine the themes for every week’s covers. You can choose your own book. Today’s theme is:
As pure as the driven snow – a cover that is white.

When Mommy saw the theme, she immediately thought of this book:

This is a beautiful book. Have you read it? And all the covers are mainly white, except the Dutch one. But isn’t that a beautiful cover? My favorite, is this one from Bulgaria:
The whole book is capture on that cover. If you’ve read it, you will understand why my Mommy says that.
What do you think? Which cover would you prefer?
Let us know what you will be reading this weekend! Remember to add your links to all our weekend friends.
Have a wonderful weekend!
Lots of love,
Elza

  1. Hi FLora! Glad you liked them! It's such a lovely book, but not everyone's reading preference. Glad you also liked my BBH answer, just made sense to me.

    Have a wonderful weekend!

  2. Lovely choice for the FFO – strangely enough I'm drawn to the cover that is completely different from the others in style and colour – although I do like the white covers too.
    Lynn 😀

  3. What a lovely collect of Friday meme's. I love those white covers too. I wonder why the Dutch print was different? I also like the way you answered the BBH, why didn't I think of that – genius!

  4. Hi Ann, I've read it last year when I was in my 40's already. I don't think a 14 year old will understand it, though. We've had it in the book club and there were certain ladies who also didn't like it. I loved it…. Surrealism is not for everyone.

I read a lot if WWII, I think the different style was what really caught my attention.

  5. Hi Sarah, you are right – if the Bulgarian cover's title were printed in red, it would have been perfect. It is a lovely book.

Thanks so much for stopping by and for always staying a while for a little chat. It means a lot to me!

  6. Thanks for dropping by my blog. I read Anna and Swallow Man several years ago and found it to be very confusing. I think surrealism is okay but for teens? Not sure it works. Your thoughts.

  7. What a cracking beginning for a book! I do love the sound of Something in the Water… and your book choice for Friday Face-off is a delight and completely unknown to me. I love your favourite – those two figures are just wonderful and I think it would been perfect, if the title font was in red, instead of grey. I hope you have a lovely weekend, Mareli – and dear little Elza also snuggles up with you in the cold. While it's one of the hottest days of the year so far, here…

  8. I just knew I shouldn't have done it! I really like the sound of 'Something In The Water', and was totally intrigued by what the couple might have found and why you wouldn't want to tell anyone, let alone why you would feel the need to bury whatever it is and not just leave it at the bottom of the ocean. So I went over to Goodreads, only to find that someone has written a real 'spoiler' of a review, so now I know just about the entire storyline!

Never mind – It probably won't stop me reading it anyway and thanks for sharing 🙂
