Wondrous Words Wednesday – Gregarious

Posted January 19, 2022 by elzaread in Wondrous Words Wednesday / 24 Comments

Greetings you guys! Welcome to another addition of Wondrous Words Wednesday, hosted by yours truly. The concept is fairly easy – all you need to do, is share any new (or new to you) words you came across this week and share them with us. You are also welcome to share words you simply want to show off to us. For more on Wondrous Words Wednesday, you can click here.

In case you haven’t noticed before, my Mommy loves company and people. I know, that’s rather strange for a bookworm, but did you know that worms actually love company and form herds?

Earthworms form herds and make “group decisions”, scientists have discovered. The earthworms use touch to communicate and influence each other’s behaviour, according to research published in the journal Ethology. By doing so the worms collectively decide to travel in the same direction as part of a single herd.

See, that is why all you bookworms love to gather here on the blogosphere and herd together. I think the perfect word for all of you today is:

We love revering to the Merriam Webster Dictionary for word definitions.

 Full Definition of gregarious

1a: tending to associate with others of one’s kind – social gregarious animals
bmarked by or indicating a liking for companionship SOCIABLE is friendly, outgoing, and gregarious
cof or relating to a social group
2aof a plant growing in a cluster or a colony
bliving in contiguous nests but not forming a true colony used especially of wasps and bees
As you guys know, we love matching books with our Wondrous Word for every week and the fun part is usually to just think off the top of my Mommy’s crazy head. Books with gregarious people who love to flock together:
  • Big Little Lies
  • Pretty Little Liars
  • Devine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood
  • Little Women
  • The Secret Seven
  • The Famous Five
  • The Wind in the Willows
  • Peter Rabbit

What did we forget here? Noticed that all of the above mentioned books has at least one gregarious character? And no cats. I don’t think my species will be classified as gregarious. Let’s rather say nothing about the dog.

wordless Wednesday

Over the last couple of weeks, we joined up with Wordless Wednesday. From new words to no words, perfectly combination. Wordless Wednesday is hosted by Sandee @ Comedy Plus and it’s even more simple than Wondrous Words Wednesday.

Wordless Wednesday (WW) is a visual blogosphere phenomenon. Wordless Wednesday is a simple blog post featuring a photo which conveys a message that speaks for itself without using words. One thing for sure is this is a fun and easy meme to do. So come and join us in Wordless Wednesday.

I don’t always like to be gregarious with people (except my Mommy and Daddy), but when it comes to the rest of the family, I’m the gregarious queen.

Would you describe yourself as gregarious?

If you came across any new and interesting words during the last two weeks, please share them with us! If you would like to make your own post on Wondrous Words Wednesday – you are very welcome! Add your link to the comments and we’ll come and visit you.

Enjoy the rest of your week!

  1. I love words, too. Here’s one for you: catawampus, noun: an imaginary fierce wild animal.
catawampus, adjective: 1 dialectal : FIERCE, SAVAGE, DESTRUCTIVE
    2 dialectal : ASKEW, AWRY, cater-cornered
    Variations: catawampous; cattywampus

Hi there Wendy! Oh wow! catawampus is a gorgeous word! I am so going to use it for one of our WWW posts! Elza will love it as well.

Thanks so much for visiting us and for sharing, you are welcome to join WWW if you want to! We will link up again on the 2nd of February.

      Have a good week ahead!

Hi there Vidaya! Yea! Another gregarious person here on the blogosphere! Gregariousness does tend to turn to grouchiness every now and then. It’s part of the package. We tend to be very passionate people you know.

I’ve watched Pretty Little Liars years ago and read the books too. They weren’t very good, sorry to say.

Glad to hear the rest made your list of favorites too.

Aaaah yea!! So glad you found WWW again! We post biweekly, so it gives you enough time to prepare. I will have a new linky up for us with the next WWW as well. Thanks so much for joining in and it’s lovely to meet you!

  2. Gregarious, me? Nope. I am quite introverted when I’m not interacting with people online. I do call myself “bookworm” on Google, though. Happy to meet you! I have no new words for this week, but started new book: Silverview, by John Le Carre.

Hi there Alana! On our side, it’s the exact opposite. Elza appears to be very gregarious on the blog, but she is actually very shy with and for people. I on the other hand, am the loud and talkative one wherever I go!

I hope you enjoy(ed) your John Le Carre and happy to make your acquaintance!

Hi Veronica, I am so very sorry to hear about your Mom. Try to hang on to the wonderful gregarious memories you have of her.

      Lots of love,

    • elzaread

Ha, do you think that’s where the name “Greg” comes from? I think it makes more than sense. Have a look for us.

      I’m a bit of a Madeline…. 🙈🙈My husband always calls me Head Girl…

      Thanks for visiting us!!

    • elzaread

Thanks Jackie! They are all very photogenic and some love the camera where others will shy away.

  3. Elsa! I am glad you share the love with your Furblings. None of the 4 of us sleep together. But we do all get along. Kozmo is our gregarious furbling. He loves everyone! Even visitors! We do have a word for you – Fenderbergers. We have had temperatures just around freezing and chunks of slushy ice bild up behind the tires of your car. They are most commonly called Fenderbergers!
Thanks for visiting us and we hope your family has a marvellously happy week!

    • elzaread

Oh I love fenderbergers! That is a very descriptive word indeed. My male Labrador is Mr Gregarious with just about anyone and anything. Very friendly boy. 6 Pets in my house and they all get along splendidly.

Thanks for returning the favour and have a wonderful weekendend ahead.

  4. Love that word and love all you furbabes. I’m more gregarious than not.

Thank you for joining the Awww Mondays Blog Hop.

Have a fabulous Awww Monday and week. Scritches all around. ♥

  5. mae

In elementary school we used to learn lists of new words, and I think that was where I learned “gregarious” — it’s a very useful word! I like the list of books that relate to the word.

    Best… mae at maefood.blogspot.com

    • elzaread

      Hi Mae!

Gregarious is a very descriptive word in deed! I love learning new words and seeing that English is my second language, it’s an endless journey!

Thanks so much for stopping by.

  6. My uncles are gregarious, and my friend Tish is gregarious, and I have always loved that about them…social…funny…talking with others…a little loud…happy in large groups…dominating the conversation in a good way…

I am definitely social, but I don’t think of myself as gregarious. I love people, and I love to spend time with people, but I also love my quiet times. Right now, with the self-imposed restrictions on spending time with groups of people, I miss people, especially large groups of people.

So, to put it in terms Elza would understand, sometimes I’m like a cat and sometimes like a dog.

Thank you for hosting Wondrous Words, Mareli.

Hi Debbie! Elza is the least gregarious of all the pets. Just “using her” for the post. I am seriously gregarious though and more than just a bit loud, I’ll admit it myself. But!! I love closing the door to the world and just read and enjoy my books.

The kids at school will tell you that I’m not what you would expect from a librarian. But I don’t think you were either….

WWW is a pleasure to me! I love having the blog a bit more active again and I hope I can stay in a rhythm.

Enjoy the rest of your week Debbie!
