Greetings Humans! Welcome to Wondrous Words Wednesday, hosted by yours truly. The concept is fairly easy – all you need to do, is share any new (or new to you) words you came across this week and share them with us. You are also welcome to share words you simply want to show off to us. For more on Wondrous Words Wednesday, you can click here.
This week will be our favorite one and our chosen word is also one of our favorite words in the whole wide world. No, it’s not a new word to any of us, but after the passed year, the concept became a bit foreign.
When my Mommy comes home from school today, we are officially on holiday until the 10th of January. Whoo hoo!! We really need a nice, long break. Don’t worry, we promise not to disappear. In fact, the plan is to spend much more time on the blog than what we did over the last couple of months.
But before all that, let’s quickly take a look at the word holiday.
Etymology. The word holiday comes from the Old English word hāligdæg (hālig “holy” + dæg “day”). The word originally referred only to special religious days. The modern use varies geographically.
Being from South Africa, we speak the Queen’s English, if we do not speak my Mommy’s native tongue of Afrikaans. So we refer to time off from work or school, to just spend relaxing and having fun, as having a holiday.
In American English, a holiday is a single day or group of days when people do not work to celebrate a special date or commemorate an important event. When Americans talk about the holidays, they mean the period at the end of year that includes Christmas and New Year.
In British English, a single day off, is called a bank holiday or a public holiday. In South Africa, we also talk about a public holiday.
The Afrikaans word for holiday, is “vakansie”. Easy to decipher where that word comes from:
The usual American word for a longer period of time spent away from work or school, or for a period of time spent away from home enjoying yourself, is vacation.
- Diamond-dot-Painting
- Reading stacks and stacks of books
- Building a puzzle (isn’t it the most adorable picture?)
- Long walks on the beach
- Working on my Mommy’s tan (with good sunblock for my ears and nose and her whole body)
- Spending time with friends and family.
Oh and tomorrow is my Mommy’s birthday! So we will have to bake cake and have some fun in the kitchen when she comes back from school.
Dearest Debbie @ Readerbuzz gave me the wonderful idea of linking up our Wondrous Words Wednesday, with one of the other popular Wednesday memes. She even went to far as to send me a whole list of all the active and inactive weekly memes. Isn’t she just the best? Where to start? I will play around with a couple of them and see which one will fit us the best, or which one are the most applicable for everything week.
This week we will go with Wordless Wednesday. The only problem is that I struggle a bit to find the link-up! Any help here?
To go from new words, to no words, might be a bit of a challenge for us. Especially for my Mommy, she talks a lot! But let’s see how it goes.
Is your Christmas Tree up? I love our Elsa/Frozen tree! Just for me!
If you want to join us for Wondrous Words Wednesday, leave your word or even a link in the comment section. We love to learn new words and see your take on it. Please share your Wordless Wednesday with us as well and if you have a link-up, please send it through?
Have a Wonderful Wednesday!
I haven’t even started ordering Christmas presents, haha. 😅
I’m loving your tree!
Lindsi @ Do You Dog-ear? 💬
Hi there Lindsi!
I am very chuffed with myself this year. First year ever that I am so well prepared…!
Good luck with the shopping that still needs to come!
Your tree is beautiful. I love puzzles and diamond dot painting too. XO
Hi there Ellen!
I’m so glad that it’s finally holiday and I can start doing all the fun things I have lined up.
I hope you are looking forward to the Christmas season too!
Well, those are great pics you put together my new friend. Thanks so much for sharing! Your tree is too cute! Pink & blue… no prejudice there! ~hehehe~ Boy & Girl that’s the way the Lord said it should be! Your post is wonderful and so is your tree! MERRY CHRISTMAS!
Hi there Marie! So pleased to meet you! Even if it is virtual.
I saw the pink and blue decorations and had the same idea of boy/girl in mind. I normally put a green tree up, but I think the white tree does add something special to it this year.
Thanks for visiting us and for taking the time to say hi!
So many wonderful things. Love the tree, the stack of books and that adorable puzzle.
Thank you for joining the Wordless Wednesday Blog Hop.
Have a fabulous Wordless Wednesday. ♥
Hi Sandee!
Hope you are well!
I’m very glad that Debbie put me on the path of Wordless Wednesday. Easy and fun, but lovely to meet all the new people too!
Yes, I also think that puzzle is adorable and can’t wait to start building. I’ve never done a puzzle with Elza, let’s see how she handles it…!
It is a bit of a challenge to write a post that is both about words and wordless. You did it, though.
The link for Wordless Wednesday is http://wordlesswednesday.blogspot.com/. I sometimes link to other wordless (ish) linkups that are linked to the main linkup.
I’m glad you have a nice chunk of time off. Renew and refresh time! Holler at me if you want to think about any ideas for your Wednesday meme. I’m retired; I’m always off!
Hi there Debbie! I do hope that this will be my last post written in haste for at least a couple of weeks.
Thanks for the link! I will definitely try to streamline all the Wednesday Memes and see where I end up ..
Aah thanks for your kind offer! I might just take you up on it still!
Nice post I like those tree photos and nicely decorated
