Wondrous Words Wednesday is a weekly meme where you can share new words that you’ve encountered, or spotlight words you love. Feel free to get creative!
No rules apply here, just share any or all the lovely or new words you’ve encountered over the last fortnight.
Tips and ideas:
- Don’t go pull the Dictionary down from the shelf. Use words you came across in a book, a TV show, Google, a pamphlet, social media, doctor’s room, classroom – the possibilities are endless

Our Wondrous Word for today, is a word that we came across in one of our recent reads, The Inaugural Meeting of the Farevale Ladies Book Club, set in the Australian Northern Territory.
According to Wikipedia, a Larrikin is an Australian English term meaning “a mischievous young person, an uncultivated, rowdy but good hearted person”, or “a person who acts with apparent disregard for social or political conventions”.
I guess it’s once again a word that we should have heard before. Sorry, no never. To my friends Down-Under, we apologize profoundly in advance if we get this word all wrong. We promise to rectify it as soon as you point out our mishaps. Please just don’t be a larrikin about it and make fun of us.
As always, my Mommy is going to try to match some books with her Wondrous Word. This is a bit tricky as my Mommy can’t think of a single book with a larrikin in. I don’t think she’s all that fond of larrikins. Not quite her idea of a suitable hero or mail lead character. But that’s only in books. She doesn’t mind a larrikin in movies all that much. Here’s a few of her favorite larrikins. I don’t believe much of an explanation will be necessaries for these guys. A few are Aussies by origin, but we are not discriminating at all.

Indiana Jones / Han Solo (Harrison Ford in general)
Johnny Depp (especially as Captain Jack Sparrow)
Mel Gibson
Heath Ledger (my Mommy had to wipe a tear away here)
Crocodile Dundee

So sorry I couldn't take part in WWWW this time (and possibly not next time either, although I shall try and juggle things around), however I have pre scheduled Blog Tour Reviews on those days. I'll try and work it so that I don't end up with too many Wednesday posts, when I am liaising with the publishers in future.
Anyway, I'm here now, and what an excellent word you have come up with this time, and I really like the sound of the book in which you discovered it. The word does sound quite familiar to me, although I couldn't have even begun to guess at the definition.
I checked on a couple of the 'Aussie' sites for more men who might fit this description, as you have named the obvious one of Paul (Crocodile Dundee) Hogan. Two more names I recognised and thought you might also, are cricketer Shane Warne and wildlife expert Steve (Crocodile Hunter) Irwin.
I love the Crocodile Dundee and Indiana Jones films – oldies I know, but still harmless good fun to relax to!

Hi there Yvonne! That's okay! I appreciate that you still take the time to stop by. Life is very hectic here on our side as well. So I understand completely.
I also took a look at that Aussie sites and if you want just about half of all South Africans to jump on me, I must add Shane Warne as a chosen larrikin on my list! Cricket is big in our country and our "rivals" rather hated. But he sure is a larrikin by all definitions.
I also love Crocodile Dundee and Indiana Jones! Excellent classics!
Texas is a land of larrikins. It's one of the common bonds between Australia and Texas. It's why you see so many romance novels with Texas larrikins (generally with their shirts off) on the cover.

We have quite a couple of larrikins here in SA as well. Texas, Australia, South Africa – I think we actually have a lot in common besides the vast open spaces.
Absolutely! I know of some cats who probably consider themselves a bit of a female larrikin, too.
