Wednesday Wisdom from Miss Benson’s Beetle

Wednesday Wisdom from Miss Benson’s Beetle

Greetings! We haven’t done a Wednesday Wisdom post in weeks. Terrible, I know. We all need some Wisdom and it truly is just wrong to keep it for yourself. Luckily the book we share with you today, is filled with the most marvelous words of wisdom. She says it will most probably be her book of the year. It’s about a beetle. Don’t we just chase those little buggers around and squash them if they get under your feet? Apparently not. Miss Benson’s Beetle is very special and you will be ever so fortunate to meet one of of them.   It is 1950. In a devastating moment of clarity, Margery Benson abandons her dead-end job and advertises for an assistant to accompany her on an expedition. She is going to travel to the other side of the world to search for a beetle that may or may not exist. Enid Pretty, in her unlikely pink travel suit, is not the companion Margery had in mind. And yet together they will be drawn into an adventure that will exceed every expectation. They will risk everything, break all the rules, and at the top of a red mountain, discover their best […]

Judaskus deur Rudie van Rensburg

Titel: Judaskus Skrywer: Rudie van Rensburg Reeks: Kassie Kasselman #3 (ek maak dit sommer self op, maar dis dalk aanbeveelbaar) Hoofkarakters: Kassie Kasselman, Rooi Els Publikasie: Mei 2015 (Queillerie) Bladsye: 332 (sagteband) Genre: Misdaad Inhoud: Teikenmark – Volwassenes. Geweld – afhangende hoe sterk jou maag is, redelik eksplisiet. Seks – meer suggestief as bloosbaar. Halleluja! Ek het egter so ‘n bietjie inhaal werk om te doen hier. Ek het nou al ‘n paar Chris […]

The Sunday Post #17

Greetings all you lovely Humans! So sorry that we didn’t get to grace you with our presence last week Sunday. The last fortnight felt a bit like the game Fortnite. No idea what it’s about, but I know the kids at school are consumed by it and they hardly have time to do anything else. Quite similar as where we are at the moment.  We are finally starting to have more spring weather, but the spring in our steps are seriously getting worn out now. You do know that the school year ends in December here in good old South Africa? That means that we’ve literally only had one term of “normal” this year with the last term left with only 22 school days. Just about all my Mommy’s students are back at school with a few new enrolments (this time of year? Yes, I know. Crazy!). Planning for the new year (with 2 to 3 variants) are in full swing, parent meetings are happening daily, transfer letters and recommendations are written in Mommy’s sleep and her student assistant is writing exams. No wonder the poor woman buys so much books.  In less exciting news, the Covid Numbers are spiking […]

Six Degrees of Separation Nov 2020 – One, Two, Buckle my Shoe

Greetings! No, it’s not raining cats and dogs. Yes, I did manage to have our Six Degrees of Separation published on the correct date. Yea to me and my Mommy! Did anyone else find the past month extremely long? Maybe it’s been all the horror in the world lately. Ever noticed that your average Horror Movie seems way longer than say your average Romantic Comedy? Apparently it’s the same in reality.   Luckily today is a beautiful sun shining day and Mommy has some time to work on the blog. Needless to say, I made sure that she starts with Six Degrees of Separation. It’s our fourth month taking part in this monthly feature hosted by Books are my Favorite and Best.  On the first Saturday of every month, a book is chosen as a starting point and linked to six other books to form a chain. Books can be linked in obvious ways, for example: same authors, same era or genre, or books with similar themes or settings. Or you might choose to link them in more personal ways: books you read in the same holiday, books given to you by a particular friend or books that remind you of a […]

Throwback Thursday #3 – The Girl who saved the King of Sweden

Throwback Thursday #3 – The Girl who saved the King of Sweden

It’s Thursday and guess what? I am right on time with this post! It’s raining a bit here and I won’t be surprised if it is because we actually managed to be on time with publication for a change. If I manage to have my Six Degrees of Separation post out by Saturday, you can expect a thunderstorm.  I know my last one went out last week, but that was for last month. But you never know, I might manage another one later this month as well. I will update you on the weather patterns as well. There are so many spins on the idea of Throwback Thursday, but I still like Davida’s idea the most: The Chocolate Lady’s #Throwback Thursday takes place on the Thursday before the first Saturday of every month. Yes, there is a linky and it will remain open until she uploads the new one. Thank Goodness. My first and last sometimes gets very confused.  Your post must highlight one of your previously published book reviews and Davida encourages other participants to do the same.  Add the link to your post and remember to link back to The Chocolate Lady’s Book Blog And do not forget to #ThrowbackThursday! With our […]

Wondrous Words Wednesday – Phantom

Wondrous Words Wednesday – Phantom

This post should have been published last Wednesday, before Halloween. But my Mommy’s last week was a bit like your worst Halloween Nightmare. So this week will have to do. You know what they say about good intentions. I do have very good intentions to post more Wondrous Words, but I just don’t get the time. I still love the idea tremendously though! I saw this very catchy blog title on Yvonne, over at  Fiction Books‘ website, and it immediately caught my lover-of-language eye. I so wish I could talk like humans. Who doesn’t love all the different languages? Who doesn’t love a good alliteration? Wondrous Words Wednesday. I can definitely purr that. My Mommy started investigating and notice that this is actually a meme started by Kathy @  Bermuda Onion Blog. But Kathy is taking a bit of a break and just like Yvonne, I do hope she doesn’t mind that we still use her meme. While taking part in the Fraterfest Read-a-thon last month, I’ve read The Secret of Skeleton Island where the three detectives encounter a movie and a ghost. Interestingly though, in the book they refer to the ghost in the story quite often as the phantom.  No, it’s not a new word to us, it’s just […]

Top Ten Tuesday – The Collected Works of Elza Reads

Greetings all you beautiful human beings! I am so excited about today’s Top Ten Tuesday prompt. Today we get to share all the stuff we do that are non-bookish. Let’s get to know each other! What do you do that does not involve books or reading? Don’t you just feel like breaking out in song – “Getting to know you, getting to like you….”? If you are anything like my Daddy, you cringe now. But if you are like me or my Mommy, you will most probably watch The King and I tonight.  Yes, all of us here on the Bookish Blogosphere live and breath books. But we are so much more than just the books we read – we are all a collected work, just like The collected works of A.J. Fikry. I love that. So let’s have a look at what the content is of my and my Mommy’s collected works.  1. Educating children to lead the generations of tomorrow This heading is the motto of the school where my Mommy works. Yes, maybe work isn’t a hobby. But if you love your job as much as my Mommy, it’s more than a job or a hobby. She’s a teacher/librarian […]

Throwback Thursday #2 – After Anna

Throwback Thursday #2 – After Anna

Yes, yes – we know. This was suppose to have been done weeks ago. We are so far behind, it appears as if we are ahead again! I really wanted to do this feature on a weekly basis. Even though it’s suppose to only be once a month. So I guess I’m half-way covered? This is exactly what we need to get the blog sorted out. Admin is not my Mommy’s strongest suit, so we need tips and tools to keep things on track. This week, we’ve decided to combine Throwback Thursday with Books from the Backlog, hosted […]

Top Ten Tuesday – The Would have, Could have, Should have and Did reads for Halloween 2020

Greetings Humans. It’s time for Top Ten Tuesday and I have no idea why that little white ball of fluff thinks this is so much fun. She and Mother always rant and rave about this highly popular feature, hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl. If you’ve been following our blog over the last two weeks, you will know that blogging is not my idea of an afternoon stroll and I do not have Elza’s bubbly personality to set the tone. I don’t do tones at all. She however, refuses to do this week’s Top Ten Tuesday, because she is still scared of the books that might go bump in the night.  Seeing that I’ve tolerated hosted The Fraterfest Read-a-thon on this blog, Elza feels it’s my duty to pick my ten favorite scary reads for this annual readathon. Of course she still believes in the goodness of puppies and rainbows and that we’ve actually read 10 books. We only managed 3 books, 2 short stories, 1 audiobook and 1 graphic novel. The rest was nothing but a bit of hope in a dark and stormy night.  I just call them the Would have, Could have, Should have and Did reads for Halloween 2020.  The ones […]

The Sunday Post #16

Hello all you beautiful Humans! Did you miss me? As you can see, poor Stinkie is dead tired after his week of the Fraterfest read-a-thon. Or maybe it wasn’t the read-a-thon, but just life in general that has him so tired. I do know my mommy suffers a bit from that at the moment. What a week the poor woman had! She and Stinkie were planning a nice, normal school week with a couple of hours every day to read their scary books. Alas. Life seriously got in the way this week. Luckily they still have me to always jump in at the last minute and safe the day. Almost like America in WWII.  Okay, I didn’t really safe anything. But I am doing today’s Sunday Post – even though Stinkie should have done it. I also cuddled the whole day with my Mommy yesterday and helped her to finish her last two books for Fraterfest Read-a-thon. And that is how you safe the world. Just some small acts of random kindness. That’s not my cleverness, it comes from the Big Man himself. How did you do with the Fraterfest Read-a-thon? Team Mommy & Stinkie’s final tally: 3 Books 2 Short […]
